Workouts without equipment

Quote  |  Reply

I'm currently working a job where I have no access to a gym or any workout equipment.  I've been running three days a week and walking a lot, but wanted to see if anyone could point me towards workout plans (esp strength training) that are bodyweight only or can otherwise be done without many resources.  I'll have access to my school's gym when I go back in August, so I don't want to invest in any home weights, videos, etc.  Thanks for the help!

Search the fitness forum, there are a few threads about this topic.

Hi quintanion

I do yoga at home.  I took some classses to familiarize myself with correct poses as to not mess up my back injury and to get the most out of the poses, but you could also try a video.  The great thing about yoga is that you can take it anywhere and put as much or as little energy into it as you want and beyond a possible mat, no equipment is needed (maybe blocks if you are very tight).  It's really toned my whole body, as well as benefiting everything else I do.  Some of the poses are much more strenuous than you would think & I always break a sweat.  It's also enough of a workout to lose weight.  I sometimes use a video if I want to mindlessly follow directions.  I don't know if product recommendations are allowed on this forum, but the people at Gaiam seem to know what they are doing, they have a wide range and are one of the companies the yoga school uses for their video library.  Another good series is from Yogafit, with real people, not models or people with perfect bodies.

Read the stickied post at the top of Fitness forum w/ the stars.  The one by Melkor has a lot of info and has many different workouts.  He has a lot of links and great info.  Thats how I started.

You and me are in the same boat.

Here are two links(the first gives exercises and the second explains how to do most of the ones on that list):

Also, one day when I was desperate I used a bottle of laundry detergent as a weight.  If you fill a gallon jug with water it weighs just slightly over 8lbs.  You can use that for weights and a broom/mop handle + duct tape to make a barbell. I haven't attempted that feat yet.  My body weight seems to be doing it for me.  Also find a playground...you can find a way to do pull ups or dips on one usually.

I took some yoga classes and now practice on my own: there are lots of poses that will build muscle. Also, I recommend lots of push ups. You can do them anywhere.
