The most important rule for weight-gain is to consume a lot more calories than you use up. In that light, the exercises to avoid would be the cardiovascular type.... energetic stuff like running, aerobics etc.... because that only burns up the energy you're trying to store. The exercises that help convert the extra energy to muscle would be those designed to strengthen.... weights, resistance etc.
If you do decide to go to the gym more regularly then make sure you increase your calorie intake substantially. Regular exercise means your body uses up more energy at rest as well. Burn 500 cals in extra exercise and you may need to compensate with 700-1000 cals extra food in order to keep gaining weight.
Phew! No wonder I've been struggling to gain!
I go to the gym six days a week and do alot of cardio, mixed with strength.
I know about restricting the cardio side of my exercise routine, but I find it SO hard to do so as I think I'm addicted to the runner's high that I get from cardio workouts.
I have been told numerous times that I don't eat anywhere near enough to maintain my weight let alone gain.
I'm glad that I've read this thread because it has yet again emphasised the fact that I need to eat more in order to carry on working out and gain weight aswell. It seems a very hard mouniain to climb, but with everyone around me telling me how concerned and worried they are about my level of activity in relation to the small amount I eat, I'm hoping I can finally one day change my mental attitude to all this.
I know nutruition is a big part of journey, every time i port something thats all i get back, once again would like some one send or help me out on a lay out of a week routine of sf some sort that is strictly for gaining weight(iv got the"i need more calories than i burn" just would like to get a good work out scedual, how many days a week, before work out(warmup),all that stuff thanks
Try the 'Fitness' board.... ?
This might help?
Cardiovascular exercise can be detrimental to weight gain. Even if you just decide to lift, eat back any calories you burn off. That said, resistance exercise, weight lifting, yoga, pilates and other strengthening techniques can be beneficial in that they help rebuild lost muscle eaten away at.

You need to prioritise and turn the mountain into a hill. If you're underweight then you need to gain weight top priority and everything else has to take a back-seat or at least severely reined in until you're a healthy weight. And then you have to carefully increase your exercise at the same time as increasing your food intake so that you don't end up slipping backwards. If you're waiting for the right mental attitude and it isn't happening then get some medical assistance.... Eating disorders take many forms and compulsive exercising combined with undereating would be a classic pattern.
The serious point is, of course, that people who aren't eating enough will find (amongst other things) that their muscles weaken. And since one very important set of muscles is the heart I'm sure I don't have to spell it out how dangerous that can be to your life-expectancy. One day you're getting a 'runner's high' and the next *pop* and you're wearing a walnut overcoat......

Where do you want to go? "Gain weight" is pretty vague.
Assuming you want to increase muscle, follow jane's advice and head over to the fitness forum. In the FAQs, there are a list of lifting routines that melkor has posted.
Starting Strength would be a good book to buy. I've also seen the recommendation for the book Scrawny to Brawny.

Phew! Hard stuff to read that is, but you are so right. That is what makes me angry with myself. I KNOW what I have to do and why, but goodness me how it seems impossible at the moment to change my ways. I always think that if I don't get my exercise in then my weight will suddenly balloon overnight, but then the more rational side of me (albeit quieter and smaller than my ED voice at the moment) says "Don't be daft - I didn't lose the weight overnight, so it won't go back on overnight".
This is a battle I'm determined to win though. Wish me luck!
