okay so my period is usually EXTREMELY regular - i've been on the pill for 2 years and get it get it the same time every cycle....it lasts for about 4 days.
last month it lasted only 2 days...and this month it is extremly light and is lasting what seems like 2-3 days.
could this be do to working out? could i be pregnant? should i be worried.
i'm currently 105-110 pounds 5'4. could this be a sign that i am an unhealthy weight?
Typically on the pill, your period should be regular. If you have lost weight recently or upped your workouts, that could cause irregular periods. Also, if you are stressed, that could affect your period.
I don't want to scare you about the pregnancy question, but I knew a girl who was on the pill and then went to the hospital one day with stomach pains and found out she was 7 months pregnant. She was shocked because she had been getting periods the whole time (but they were lighter) and she hadn't gained weight or had any pregnancy symptoms (morning sickness, etc).
I would recommend seeing your doctor so that s/he can figure out the cause.
Going by your screen name, I am assuming you are a runner? I am on the pill and have been for 10 years, recently I trained for a marathon and I lost my period for 2 months in the training (actually earlier on). My doctors said it was completely normal. I started eating mroe healthy fats and also I think my body just adjusted to the increase in exercise...it came back. So maybe it is due to increased running?
k awesome thank you...
my mom is an obgyn...(i asked her about it but obviously wouldn't go for a checkup with her)...i have an appointment with a doctor next week so hopefully he'll clear things up.
she said that it is impossible to get your period if you are pregnant...most ppl confuse pregnancy bleeding with your period - so you may bleed during pregnancy but it's not from your menstraul cycle. but that is a good idea go to the dr. anyway....
sealion...thanks for your reply....i am a runner...my long runs are about 15 miles - but i've been running for about 2 years and have trained for 2 marathons - i've recently plateaud at my weight (2 yrs ago before i started running i was 140) .....did your doctor say you lost your period due to low body fat or b/c of the physical strain? i'm extremely worried about losing my period b/c i have heard horror stories about ppl overtraining and in the long run becoming infertile.....how much more did you start eating? did you put on weight?
Hey runner. Ok first things first, relax. If you're not pregnant, then I'm telling you, it is nothing to be worried about. I was freaking out too and it only made the situation worse as stress has also been known to stop periods. I am also going into my 3rd yr of medical school, so I have a bit of knowledge as well, in addition to what 2 doctors told me and my own personal experience. And I am NOT clinically underweight (5'9, 135) So to answer all of your Qs:
How long have you been running 15 milers? Those are very long "long runs"; hopefully you aren't doing them weekly as that can be pretty body damaging. Even the NIH says no one person should train for more than 2 marathons a year.. Even if you have been running 15 milers for a while, the fact that you say you have recently plateaued at your weight makes me think even more that it is running that caused this period loss, as that is what happened to me. When I started plateauing, it is like your body is out of weight loss mode, it doesn't want you to lose anymore so it starts conserving. The next step after weight loss is period loss, because your body basically "doesn't think it could handle the stress of a pregnancy" so it stops ovulating by lowering estrogen levels.
OK. So I think you get the point I am like 95% sure the loss is due to running. Again, I went to my doctor and they didnt even do blood tests because they were "so sure" it was due to running. It is kind of a combo between low body fat and stress that does it. Losing your period for a few months isn't per se "normal" but it isn't the end of the world, and you ecrtainly won't become infertile because of it. However, I would suggest some changes.
I added more protein and fats to my diet, because those are stored more than carbs are, and in the easiest way possible of explaining it, your body starts re-thinking its conservation-mode mindset. I added things like greek yogurt, almonds, avocado, walnuts, a little more olive oil than usual, and had some more meat. I cut down on pretzels and cereal-my staples. I took some yoga and tried to relax. I skipped a long run one week. I got a few massages. 2 months later-my period was back and I felt alot better. My body just needed a little while to relax. So try really hard to tune into your body.
Your last question, no, I did not gain weight. I actually ran better after I cut down just a bit. Recently after that I started changing my running habits. Instead of 6 milers daily, I changed one to cross-training and one to interval training (sprints and the like). Dropped another couple lbs from that.
if youre still getting a period every month, youre fine.
ANY sign of blood is a good sign! You shouldn't worry although if next month you don't get any period then I would start thinking... "hm is my working out affecting my period"... I haven't had my period in years (and by years I mean like 5 or 6) and just recently went on birth control (again) to try and bring my hormone levels up to get one... and it worked, so now I am once again a woman! ha ha!
As for being pregnant... We all know how to get there... so you have to ask yourself if you did the "dirty" recently! LOL
How often should you eat during the day?
It is neither necessary to eat every two hours nor to stop eating at 6:00 PM. As long as your calorie intake is less than your output... Read more
