Worried -- sex pre-ovulation -- experience with Plan B?

Quote  |  Reply

Hubby and I did the deed as early as you possibly could on the morning of May 28 (around midnight).  No protection or birth control (I can't take them -- they make me CRAZY)...stupid in-the-moment kind of thing.  I was a little worried so I went online to figure my likely ovulation date.  Fertile period of May 28-June 4 with June 3 being the likely ovulation day (14 days after period).  How long can sperm live in your body?  Is there a doctor who could tell me the likelihood that I could be getting pregnant at this very moment (or in the next few days)?

Of course, I would love the baby, but we SO don't want to "start over" at this point.  (We have two kids, Aaron, 7 in July and Emily, 8.)  I've just started seeing my little six pack for goodness sake!!  Plus, we have an awesome 10 year anniversary beach trip planned for August -- I don't want to be PG now!!!  This waiting until June 18 or so to get my period is going to KILL me!  Uuugh.

I have heard many times that sperm can live about 3 days. That puts you in the range but probably not on the most "likley" date of June 3. That date range is most accurate if your cycle is really regular (mine isn't so I can never know). I don't know of any way to know until you get closer to your next period and you could then take a preg test.

Hope it all works out for you!

June 18th will be here before you know it!  There's always a chance you could have gotten pregnant; you'll just have to wait it out!  That's the best advice I can give!  I'm not an ovulating expert-  this is coming from someone who's 32 weeks pregnant after missing two Birth control pills (it was an insurance thing and the fact that I was sleeping away from home unexpectedly) and getting pregnant even though I was on them straight for 8 years!!!

Sperm can live for up to 72hrs in you, but the ovulation date is just an estimate- some ovulate earlier in their cycle, some later. I speak from experience as when ttc no.2 I was using tests to pinpoint my ov dates- some cycles it would be around day 13-14, sometimes around day 20! What about the morning after pill- it can work up to 72hrs after the 'deed'? It might give you some reassurance?

I've actually thought about that, but due to our religious beliefs, I just can't.  We aren't regular church-goers, but we were both raised deep in the Bible Belt to believe that life starts at conception and that we might therefore be killing our "baby" if I took the morning after pill.  I just couldn't do that -- as much as I don't want to be pregnant.

I guess I'm just going to have to wait.  This sucks.  No more throwing caution to the wind for us -- no way.

Thanks for the input, everybody.

Hey -- I just looked up the morning-after pill online.  I did not know that it is not the same as the "abortion pill" (Mifiprex).  I thought it was another "abortion" pill.  I found out it actually works by PREVENTING pregnancy using the same hormones found in regular birth control pills (just higher doses) to prevent pregnancy.  It also says that it will not affect a pregnancy if one has already occurred.  I just called my doc -- I will probably go get this at the pharmacy.  Tonight at midnight will be 72 hours.  THANKS a million, irishMUM!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not sure what software you were using. Unless you were charting your fertile signs and/Temp its going to be very difficult to pin point ovulation and fertility.  If you aren't fertile (meaning your Cervical fluid is acid) sperm can only live a day or so if that.  However if you are fertile (egg white Cervical fluid or wet CF) sperm can survive as along as seven days. (Just asked one of my friends that charts..she has baby girl right now)

As for the morning after pill. I have taken Plan B once, and I was totally freaked out by it.  I took it and my Period didn't show up for 52 days.  I was on cycle day 8 with NO fertile signs..but I usually O between CD 11-14 so I was within range.  What was really hard to take was the fact that every thing I read said it shortened the luteal phase to keep a potential pregnancy from being sustained.  Aggg....why then did I have such a long cycle.

All is well now...I always use my Diaphragm pre-ovulation and DP ALWAYS pulls out no matter where we are in our fertility cycle.

weddingmama - did you have any other side effects from Plan B - besides the delayed period?

I just took it.  The pharmacist said some people get really sick after taking it.  Hope that I'm not one of them.

I was going by several online ovulation calculators that I checked out.  Last day of my period was May 20.  I have a 28 day cycle.  They say an average of 14 days after the first day of your period is your likely ovulation date, which would put mine at June 3.  However, it says that my fertile period could be anywhere from May 28-June 4.  I haven't done the basal body temp thing, but I think I know when O's usually close b/c my sides cramp and I pay close attention to the cervical fluid -- yesterday I got mild cramping and the CF has been looking pretty right the past couple of days.

Hopefully I took this early enough to prevent pregnancy.  I wouldn't want to abort a baby that was already growing, but Plan B does the same thing as birth control pills - preventing pregnancy - so I'm ok with that.

How do you like the diaphragm?  I will probably ask doc about one at my yearly in June.

Plan B made me get my period early, not like a few days early but like 2 wks early so your cycle might get all messed up from the hormones. Believe me it sucked - I had 2 periods within the course of two weeks of each other one from previous and the super early one from the next.

I didn't get sick from Plan B..but I also took the old school morning after pills and didn't get sick. I had a few friends in college who took them and ended up needed to skip class because it made them so sick.

I like the Diaphragm alright. I only use it during the pre-ovulation phase of my cycle. The final two weeks are fair game. :)  The D is better than using a condom that's for sure.  With the D it can at least be inserted several hours before the act.

I've taken Plan B before with no side effects.  Don't hesitate to take it - the longer you wait, the less effective it is.

So.. was having two messed up periods *worse* than getting pregnant?  I think it's important to consider the alternative...

Thanks so much, y'all.  I didn't get sick from it, but the large dose of hormones really kicked in and I felt like I was going crazy by yesterday.  Mood swings, depressed, upset by the smallest things, etc.  That's the way birth control pills do me so I guess I'm just sensitive to it.  I'm feeling much better today though and not so worried anymore.  I took it within 72 hours, so hopefully all will go as planned.  At this point, I will be so glad to get my period...I don't care if it lasts for 2 weeks!  Hopefully it won't mess that up too bad, but I can deal with it if it does.

Hi Huntermom, I'm so glad you sorted things out, I just hope you get the reult you want? I've taken it twice now and had no side-effects at all, but a friend took it and was sick within 4hrs & ended up pregnant. She didn't have the baby (which I didn't agree with but thats another story...) but thinks its a load of poo-ey! I was so grateful there was something like it available as I wasn't in a good place to become a Mum at the time. I now have two beautiful girls who I appreicate & thank God for every day. I use birth control pills now- I don't like the idea of something inside me (cap, diaphragm, coil, implant rods etc.)- I know thats strange- I have no problem with taking hormones but won't let an 'object' be my birth control...ah well?!

Thanks very much.  I'm just so glad you mentioned it.  Like I said, I didn't think there was anything available for that besides RU-486.  I'm glad I checked it out.  I am feeling a little more back to normal, but, I swear, taking hormones just doesn't agree with me.  I seriously felt like I was about to loose it Sunday afternoon.  Even though I know it's the hormones making me feel that way, I can't help it.

I haven't had any spotting or anything (like the insert says you may)...but am hoping that it worked as it's supposed to.  Did you have any spotting after you took it?

I will let you know -- but it will be another few weeks.

Not that I can remember? My period also arrived on time (well, maybe a day or two late- but that was normal!) so I didn't have to wait too long to see if it had worked. I'll be thinking of you, Xxx

Hey - thought I'd update everybody.  I started bleeding...not spotting...yesterday.  It' spretty much like a regular period, so I am quite sure that I am not pregnant.  It is very early (estimated date was June 18).  I guess I shouldn't expect another one for a month or so after this one's over though.

Anyway -- it worked.  Thanks again everybody.

Hope all goes well, but I'd like to add that sperm can live in your body up to 5 days.. the egg only lives for about 24 hours, max 48.

I am currently readig a great book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility. You can check out some FAQ on their site www.TCOYF.com. According the the book, how long sperm can live in your body depend on your cervical fluid. If you were discharging eggwhite "stretchy" cervical fluid (the most fertile fluid) at the time of intercourse then sperm can live up to five days in your body. Most women start to produce this type of fluid a few days before ovulation but it varies with each woman. If you were dry that day then you should be alright. Hope this helps.

I would suggest this book for anyone trying to conceive or trying to aviod pregnacy. It discusses the FAM method and I have found it very interesting.

Did your cycle return to normal after the early period from plan B?

Mine were a little erratic for a few cycles afterwards? HTH?
