It could be worse...
Having one of those days where you feel like you can't possibly stay in your calorie allowance? It could be worse... you could be a cat. My cat, at a svelte 5 kilograms, can eat 150 calories per day. For comparison:
- 1 can tuna (in water) - 191 kcal
- 1/2 cup chicken liver - 117 kcal
- 1 squirrel - 541 kcal
- 1/4 cup cream - 205 kcal
Poor kitty. All that dry food must get monotonous. :( Luckily for him a tablespoon of catnip has only about 5 calories, which compares quite favorably to my intoxicant of choice. ;)
Note: Do not put your cat on a diet without the supervision of a doctor. You'll need him on call when your cat takes revenge by eating your toes while you sleep.
I think what I love most about this post is that I now know that a squirrel is 541 Cal. ^.^
However, if we do equivalents by body weight, 150 cal for 5 kilos = +/- 2000 cal for 65 kilos. I WANNA EAT 2000 Cal a day and still lose weight!!
My poor puppy is on a diet too, he is obese by dog standards (which is weird because my other dog, who eats the same as him, is a very healthy weight). I make all their food now days; pork sirloin or chicken breast, vegetables and pumpkin as a filler.
On a side not, I used to work at a vet clinic - the fattest cat that came in was a tortishell female who weight 33lbs 1/2. She looked like a little watermelon on legs. >.<
omg 33 pounds!? my cat is about 16 pounds but he is huge! and i mean body frame type huge. i don't know what kind of crazy parents he had but they must ahve been massive. it's funny b/c my other cat is tiny. he just kinda stopped growing after a year and is about the size my 16 pounder was when he was about 5 months old. they are so bizarre together!
i'm glad that know i know if he catches and eats a squirrel he has to have less cals the next day lol

I guess climbing curtains burns a lot of calories. :) Unfortunately that one wasn't in the database!
Remember that smaller animals need more calories per pound because of thermogenesis and their larger surface/volume ratio.
