Your Worst Injuries. Ever.
Many of us, particularly athletes, have that one grisly injury story. Some have more. There was one time period (August 07 - Feb 08) where the injuries did not stop pouring in. Let's share some stories.
- Pulled my left quad in August 07. Sprinting in soccer tryouts.
- Severe concussion in September 07. Collision in a soccer game. Unconcious for 15 minutes at least and totally whiped my memory of that 30 minutes.
- Strained and internally bruised my deltoid, rhomboid, trapezius, and rotator cuff 4 days after my concussion. Refused to sit out of the game (I should've because of my recent concussion), got into a collision, flipped over the girl and landed on my shoulder. I didn't keep off it for 2 months and it didn't heal for about 3-4 months and it still hurts sometimes.
- Severe contusion on my knee in Novermber 07. Yet another collision in soccer.
- Severe arch pain in December 07. Running too much.
- Pulled my right quad in January 08. Sprinting in my lax game.
And the curse ended in February =)
How about everyone else?
I tore my ACL completely in half and my meniscus in half and flipped it over. I had to have a bone graft to repair the ligament and had to have my meniscus pinned down. It was rough! 6 month recovery. Then I tore my meniscus again and had to have another surgery. That one wasn't as bad.
I had a footpeg from my dirtbike puncture my left calf muscle. I required 14 stitches: 5 down deep and 9 up top.
I broke the knob of my right humerous. Dirbike injury. This one was interesting because my ENTIRE right arm turned black/purple from the blood draining out of the broken bone, however, I did not go to the doctor for 4 days so I did not really think it was broken. I actually thought it was a torn rotator cuff because if "felt" the same (Painful and could not move it) (See Torn Rotator cuff, below)
Torn Rotator Cuff on left shoulder. Dirtbike injury. From landing on outstretched arm, overextending it upon impact. This one actually hurt more than the broken humerous and imbedded footpeg combined!
That's about it.
i have never had very severe injuries, but i'm a ballet dancer and my joints are EXTREMELY loose (it's also hereditary). i've popped my knee out of socket twice, my collarbone about four times, and i can pop my shoulders out at will. none of that really hurts except the knee--that one hurt like a b*tch.
I got a concussion sledding by sledding straight into a tree. I kept expecting the sled to kind of turn, but... it didn't. I wasn't knocked out, but I swear I felt my brain rattling around. I had headaches for the next week and for the three days after my dad woke me up in the night every two hours to make sure I hadn't gone comatose. XD
The next year I sledded into a house. (The side of the house, not the door.) I broke my collarbone.
we were at the driving range (golf, for those who don't know), and i was sharing a bucket of balls with my sister. i went over to get more balls, and i don't even know what happened, but somehow she hit me right next to my eye, between my temple and my eyeball, with her golf club, on her swing. after passing out, i got dragged to the hospital and required 12 stitches. but i was lucky she didn't hit my eye.... or my temple.... she could have blinded me.
this wasn't athletic related, purely clumsy related :P
i slipped over and split my knee open on the bottom of a door frame. the cut was a few inches deep and therefore my knee is now numb because the nerves were cut. i had to get 25 stitches (a mixture of deep and surface ones), and the scar is about the length of two pinky fingers across my knee :)
i have links to pics of the scar, stitches or cut if anyone is bored/interested with a strong stomach.
AAAHHH each and every one of you make me cringe! i am 25 and i've never broken anything, never had stitches, never been hurt that bad, a few pulled muscles and a mild concussion. i am a little envious. watch now tomorrow i will fall down the stairs and break my leg.
laur3nmae: Sure, go ahead and post some links to pics!! I always like to see stuff like that. I have an iron stomach.
I was at 5-Star basketball camp in VA and we were playing in this huge hanger looking thing, and the courts had been brought in. They were like 8 inches off the cement. I went diving for a loose ball and tossed it back in and went cartwheeling off the court. I slid like 3 feet and leveled a 10 gallon trash can. Lots of noise, lots of stuff everywhere. The trainers came running over and when I rolled over it looked like someone had stuffed a grapefruit under my skin around my wrist. I shattered 4 bones, including the scaphoid into like 7 or 8 pieces. I had to have surgery and 6 pins put in. It was gruesome.
I've never suffered anything truuuuuly horrible, but this was the only thing that ever sent me to the hospital...
In my senior year of highschool, I did colorguard with the marching band and made weapon line, so i spun both rifles and sabres. In the middle of one performance, I was supposed to throw the blade into the air, let it rotate 5 times, and then catch it with my arm twisted around. I got the whole thing right, but twisted my arm too far and the sabre came down spinning and chipped a bone in my elbow. I was so into doing the show that I didn't even notice and performed the rest of the halftime routine. When I walked off of the field, I suddenly had horrible pain spasms in my arm. Yuck!
Sheesh, these make mine sound like nothing! Oww!
Lauren, I wanna see your pictures. xD I've always liked looking at other people's injuries. (Horribly morbid, but true. If I had the memory for it, I'd want to be a doctor.)
I was born without the sockets in my knees, and I am highly athletic so sometimes at volleyball and tennis matched I fall down and cannot get up. Every morning I have to rotate my bones around to form a fake socket.
I have also shattered every bone in my foot in gymnastics and was forced to run the mile on it the next day at track!
before i had to quit gymnastics i. . .
-Broke my foot in half,
-broke my elbow [i have nerve damage in my elbow and foot now]
-broke my hand,
-broke my toes many of times,
-chipped both of my shoulder bones [they pop out of place all the time now]
-fractured my back, knees, ankles, wrist, leg.
hmmm im a mess :/
I posted the broken arm pic in my gallery if anyone wants to see it , I will leave it up for a few days.
In high school I pinned a girl in the corner in basketball and she tried to run through me. She got the wind knocked out of her and had a bruised neck. I injured my tailbone so bad I couldn't sit for over a week.
Also in high school at field hockey practice, I was playing defense and a girl drove the ball (about the size and a little harder than a baseball) directly into my shin at point-blank range. It bruised my fibula! I had some form of bruise (and pain) from August through March.
I was doing some stomach exercises in college and holding myself up with my arms. My right shoulder slid out of the socket. I still have pain from that 10 years later!
Most recently, I was running and looked to change the song on my ipod. As I looked down, my foot hit the side of the road and there was about a 6 inch dropoff. I severely sprained my ankle and had to walk 1/2 mile home. It still tweaks when I run, 6 months later.
As of today, though, I can recount a few more injuries. Taking a few nasty spills off my bike, being scraped off my horse by the low-hanging plum trees, having a ten-pound weight dropped on my head, getting shin splints, or unloading 86 bales of hay in cargo shorts and getting cut by baling wire. (a few scars from that..)
....That's all, I think. But no broken bones! xD
About two years ago I was riding a scooter in the street and I was going really fast down this huuuuge hill when I hit a rock. My scooter jerked to a stop and I flipped over the handle bars and flew about 6 feet into the air, landed on the asphalt and slid across it for about 10 feet. No broken bones or anything but my skin was shredded on my arms and legs.
Then horseback riding. I've been really lucky with that, but about 6 months ago I was riding this pony and and we were jumping this big oxer, and he took off alright but he never actually landed. He just sort of crashed to the ground and took the entire jump down with him, crushing me in the process, then thrashed around getting up and kicking me several times. That hurt.
It was during soccer practice. I was a fullback so i was always in the back of the field. Well i was looking way down the field at the ball and then i was just walking and i guess that i didn't see a hole, so i fell and sprained my ankle. Yeah embarrassing!
One more, During the paddling season we were paddling in bacteria infested waters. So i had to get surgery in my leg because the infection got in me and everything just started to progress. It was terrible!
