Wow, don't drink soda.

So I was doing research online about soda and how unhealthy is was. Seeing how this is one of my biggest contributers to my obesity I was trying some concrete evidence as to why I shouldn't drink it anymore, and I found it.

Here is the website:
http://www.healthbolt.net/2006/12/08/what-hap pens-to-your-body-if-you-drink-a-coke-right-n ow/

If you don't want to go to an external site, here is the information for you:

Have you ever wondered why Coke comes with a smile? It?s because it gets you high. They took the cocaine out almost a hundred years ago. You know why? It was redundant.

  • In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don?t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.
  • 20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There?s plenty of that at this particular moment)
  • 40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
  • 45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
  • >60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.
  • >60 Minutes: The caffeine?s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you?ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.
  • >60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you?ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You?ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.

So, yes there is a chemical in soda to stop you from vomiting. All of this is just from 1 soda, I sometimes have 4 or 5 a day. Past three days I have only drank water but I kept having cravings for soda, well this new information sealed the deal for me. No More Soda!

GREAT INFO ! THANKS
Wow!  Thanks for sharing that.  I have stopped drinking soda, and this makes me very glad that I did!

Edited to add: And don't even look into all the possible issues with diet sodas and artificial sweeteners.  That'll send a chill up your spine. ;)
Good Job Matt!!!!!! Yes.. its very bad for you.... I have researched this big time... Just watch the scale now that yoru ot drinking any.. that will keep you away too!!!
Took me a couple of weeks to not crave it anymore, but that was about 4 years ago now and I promise I don't miss it AT ALL.

unlike ice cream....   ;)
is this the same with diet soda?

cuz im addicted to the stuff. its great. and if you drank diet and caffeine free it would probably be okay..right?
I'm not sure of the actual scientific backing, but a recent study claims that even though you are cutting calories with diet soda you are still at the same health risk. You could develop metabolic syndrome, which have a combination of risk factors for diabetes and heart disease, such as high blood pressure and elevated triglycerides.

I'm not to sure on this, but I got my information from this site.

I know lots of people drink soda everyday. But I just don't like it, haven't had any for a long time now.
It kind of makes me wonder what's in the other stuff I drink to replace soda.

I work in fast food, so soda and ice water are my only sources of hydration, and I have a tendency to have a gulp of diet soda to wash down my dinner.

I'm kind of regretting it, and am thinking I'll stick with the ice water tonight.

And show this to my fiance, who has been trying to give up sodas for a while now.

I was such a Sprite addict - then I started drinking Perrier or other types of sparkling water. I swear by it - it won't taste at all the same at first - but eventually you will be able to get over your craving for a carbonated beverage with water!
Hummm...I wonder if thats why Sprite helps when you feel nauseous? The phosphoric acid? Just thinking out loud :)

I don't drink regular soda (accept sprite when I'm feeling sick), but I do have about 4 diet cokes a week. After reading that, I should stop those too!
Good article Matt.

Just sent it to my partner who's totally and completely addicted to pop (Canadian English for soda).

I'd live happily ever after without any pop ever again. I prefer water anywhere and anytime, despite the fact that restaurants charge horrendous prices for the bottled variety that I like so much.
no soda for me, thanks...

Even though I allways get that strange look from my friends when I order "that mineral with lime" again and again ^^
oh man!!

I do not drink soda at all.........thankfully. I have a friend that drinks a ton of it though..upwards of 2 liters a day!  She is always struggling with her weight, and is now on weight watchers at 300 lbs.

I'm going to send her this link.
I'm glad I could share this with everyone, it was just as a shock to me as it is to most of you. I always knew soda wasn't good for me but I didn't know it was this extreme.

3 cheers to all of us who say "No to soda"

I used to be a Pepsi hound.  It was almost all i ever drank.  I quit cold turkey last january, and I haven't had any since.  This post just makes me even more glad that i did!
Hmm, im not too sure about the vomit thing.... i can eat tons of sugar really fast without having trouble (mmm stuffing mouth with cookies, or marshmallows, or icecream, or just plain sugar! I have done them all without having an issue...)
I am glad my parents didn't ever have full sugar drinks in the house. They DID love diet pepsi and diet coke though and I  could drink a lot of it, which isn't good either. At the time I drank a LOT of diet pepsi, a moderate amount of milk, and hardly any water. I forced myself to start drinking more water and slowly half of the pepsi was replaced by water, and then 75% and now I drink water most of the time and milk the other approx. 20% of the time and don't crave any kind of soda at all. It took a while, but I'm sure anyone can do that.
Good post, good info. I got ride of the soda crave by drinking  green tea. Now like lucy I drink mineral water or sparkling water.  Carbination is aslo very bad for you besides the sugar.  It is the same gas as what you breath out.  Would you put a waste product back into your body?  It is a on going fight not to drink sweet water.
That caffeinated drinks aren't hydrating is partly a myth. Caffeine is a diuretic, but the water in the beverage cancels that effect out for most people; caffeinated beverages DO replenish some water for the body, but not as much as something without caffeine, since part of the water does get flushed out.

10 teaspoons of sugar won't make most people vomit, either.

Some coffee beverages have as much sugar and caffeine - if not more (Starbucks, anyone?) - and don't cause ill effects as long as they're not overconsumed. Full-sugar soda sure isn't good for you, but this information doesn't sound too reliable.
i used to be pretty addicted to soda when i was a tad younger. i'm glad i don't drink it anymore. i'm sticking to water...
