Well all this week in my health class, we're learning about nutrition, diets, and all that good stuff! It was interesting because my teacher was going over some of the things that are about on CC. I thought that was cool! :) Hehe, anyway, whenever she mentioned anything remotely healthy and good for your body like whole grains, vegetables, skim milk and other nutritious foods, I'd always hear a big groan or moan about how nasty healthy food is. Geez... My friends are lucky they have ultra-fast metabolisms now but after highschool... Whew! Not to mention most of them are out of shape because of their eating habits. (I could be considered more fit than one of my friends that are half my weight!)

Have you all ever known people who can eat whatever they want and not gain anything but despised healthy foods and alternatives? Or are or were you someone like that? I think it's rather interesting. I've seen thin people when they were kids become heavier as time went by because their eating habits wouldn't change and heavy people as kids be healthy when they grow up because they changed and developed their eating habits as they progressed their life (btw, I want to be one of those people. ^_^) Any input is appreciated!

I remember as a small child I was "plump" and then when I turned 8 my sister signed me up for the swim team at our local pool and that summer I slimmed down alot and never really got "plump" again until after having children and getting a desk job and eating fast food and junk and became obese.  Luckily I had a dr who flat out told me I was fat and I was going to have to be on diabetic meds and cholesterol meds if I didn't lose the weight.

I have 2 daughters who have been thin their entire lives - granted they are 17 and 20 but I don't see them as developing the obesity trait that runs on my side of the family - luckily they have their dad's "thin genes".  When my youngest was one the pediatrician gave us a month to "fatten her up" because she wasn't on the growth charts - like I said she has been thin her entire life.  My husband was just telling me that she wants to go to the weight training class with us "to put meat on her bones" in her own words.  I know she's not anorexic -although we (her boyfriend and I) would tease her that she was - but she eats all the time and usually more than me.  She probably eats her fair share of junk food after all she's a teenager - but I know she also asks us to buy certain foods that are very healthy.  I never forced them to clean their plates and I always tried to fix well balanced meals.  I do remember for "treats" when they were really young I would give them frozen peas and corn - didn't cook them just handed them the bag right out of the freezer and you know to this day they will still grab a bag of frozen veggies and eat em.

I think some of these issues are hereditary and some are what the parents did when the kids were small.
My best friend (that I also happen to live with) is like that. She could always eat whatever she wanted. She doesn't talk badly about healthy eating and stuff but never does it. She was 100 pounds when she got pregnant. Got up to 160. Her baby is now 4 weeks old and she's really pissed that she hasn't (naturally) lost all the weight yet.

I hate to say it, but it's kinda amusing that she didn't lose it all immediately :) I'm going to hell for saying that. :)
Amykara,

That was a hilarious post!  Don't feel bad.  It is SO hard for us all to lose weight, and we are working SO hard.  Once in a while, we need some validation that our hard work pays off.  If your skinny friend had the same diet and exercise habits as you, she would be losing the pregnancy weight.  Skinny people don't understand about the food they put in their mouths!  They just pack it in - while we have to watch.

I have this issue with my boyfriend.  He is SO skinny, and just eats whatever he wants.  I watch him scarf down half a bag of chips at a time.  I just calmy eat my low-cal popcorn.  One day, however, he will have to follow my strict diet, or he'll get a belly!  However, until that day - he still gets to dig in!!! It's not fair...
Well, you know, some of these "skinny" people can clog up their artieries and harm their bodies too. Just because they're skinny doesn't mean they're healthy. You can have HIGH blood pressure and HIGH cholesterol and still be thin. So don't be jealous of how much they can eat. :)
I work at a 24 hour bagel store... I work the night shift... so I get all the drunks.  Anyway... I see people sometimes from school, (thank god most of them don't recognize me because they are drunk lol I hate talking to people I know from school)  I haven't been in hs in about 6 years... anyway... the last time I saw these people they were all really skinny, athletic types... but now, they are just plain heavier... Almost all of them too... It's amazing.... they look just older and heavier... So, for probably a quarter of the people I went to high school with that were skinny, are now heavier...   it's weird to see.  Me included... I'm now 100 lbs heavier than I was in high school... Used to weigh 125.. now I'm 222....  Times change... I think college and drinking may have something to do with it. :)

YES! My sister is like that! She's in 6th grade and all you ever see her do is EAT, EAT, EAT, and I supposed it'd be a little different if she was eating HEALTHY food, but nope, just junk. And right now the whole family is trying to make her get healthier, but she always breaks down. There was one evening I remeber when she had 2 packs of mini muffins that are 250 calories each, and 2 ice cream bars that are 150 cals each. I was thinking, that's 800 CALORIES in snacks in about 1 1/2 hours!
i used to be one of those people! well, i was never really skinny but quite trim and just so athletic that my muscle burned up all the calories i consumed and i never thought about it. then i got to college, started eating late at night, stopped exercising and gained 30 pounds in less than 9 months. yikes. my mom used to warn me that my metabolism would change eventually and i'd just laugh her off but now i know she was right!
I used to be ultra thin as a teenager. I ate anything I could get my hands on but I was also involved in basketball, softball, track, ballet, and I walked everywhere I went, including school. Once I had a baby all that changed. I began putting on weight.

I am currently about 35 pounds overweight. I just started a new way of healthy eating as of yesterday.
I think we've all known people who ate what they wanted and didn't gain weight.  Usually they start to gain later in life when their metabolisms slow down or after they have babies or whatever, so yes, there can be justice in the world.

Most people think nutritious food is gross until they get used to eating it.  I think there's kind of a stigma attached to healthy foods in Western society, like we're all trained from childhood to think anything that's good for us has to taste bad.  Once you try it, though, you can easily find yourself liking foods you would've turned your nose up at the mention of, before ^_^ .
It's kind of funny that American's do tend to hate healthy foods like that. Why make something if you could get it out of a vending machine? I was really lucky, I guess. My mom trained me to dislike processed foods, unfortunately she's also a really amazing cook and makes a lot of tasty food.
I totally believe that, I have a friend who eats at McDonalds three times a week and she is wonderfully thin, but make her walk uphill?  She pants and sweats as much as someone who is 250lbs (and unhealthy)!

Even at my heaviest, I was never as unhealthy as she.  Perhaps it is a blessing in disguise that we are made more aware of our health because of our body image.
I grew up knowing nothing about nutrition. My Mom hated to cook (and wasn't any good at it, sorry Mom!), my Dad hated all vegetables and seafood and demanded red meat daily, so I grew up eating lots of food out of boxes (powdered potatoes? seriously, how hard is it to make real potatoes?). I don't remember EVER having fresh fruit in the house. Lots of Doritos and TV dinners but no fruit! To say I ended up to be a picky eater is an incredible understatement.

I managed not to gain weight until I got pregnant at 23. Then all bets were off! I gained 70 pounds (ouch). Wasn't until I was struggling to lose those last 30 post-baby pounds that I became aware of nutrition. I still remember the book that turned on the light for me. Getting Thin: All About Fat - How You Get It, How You Lose It, How To Keep it Off For Good. That book  (and a 2nd husband with an interest in nutrition) changed my life.

I gradually weaned myself of the bad stuff and transitioned to a diet of "real" food, but I was still a picky eater.  As I approached 40 and started drinking red wine my taste buds "woke up" (I say it was the wine!). After almost 40 years of meat and potatoes suddenly things started to taste differently. One of the strangest things that's ever happened to me, my palate changing. I started to cook more, and life is now very, very different.

If I can change how I eat (and learn to cook!) ANYONE can!
