Wow, this is slightly odd...(Need some help... Athlete who usualy tries to gain weight, now needs to lose it quick....)

I have though about dieting for a while now, I am an athlete, 5'4-5 about 4.5

Im ok with my weight during sports seasons it jumps quite a bit due to muscle mass.

and I range from 105 to 135 due to my sports. During my break seasons, i weigh about 105. During my tennis, I weight about 115, and during basketball I jump back and forth between 125-135. I often eat a lot of bad food, and my metabolism handles it. I gain most of my weight from muscle, as when im playing sports I lift weights 3 times a week, and exersize for 14-20 hours a week on the that exact sport. And run about 3 miles a week. So I would say I spend about 24 hours in 1 week Excersizing 1 half of the year.

The problem for me is, although Im happy with my body, I sustained a knee injury when a rather large girl ran into me, pushed me to my knees, and then proceeded to fall ontop of me. This pushed the knee cap in a bad way, and I sustained sprains in my knee ligaments, and now how severe tendonitus and injury in the area.

This was after my basketball season. I am a competitive highschool player. I play at varsity level for both tennis and basketball. But I have a few more years of highschool playing,so since i finished the season I have to get better as fast as possible for tennis.

Due to the problem being in my knee the least pressure I exert on it, I think the faster it will heal. Thats what the doctors said. I have some fat, but a low fat to muscle ratio. This means when I try to lose weight I lose muscle not fat. I am trying to lose enough weight that it makes my knee heal a lot faster. So I can start running again. (Im a runner also... no competitivly.. But i am usual the fastest one on my sports teams)

So pretty much this sucks, because Im just doing this to heal faster from my injuries, but at the same time I dont know what I should eat in order to help my knee heal... I spend 1 hour a day stretching and doing special activities that the doctors gave me. But i think if i take pressure off my knee it will help.

What do you think? What should i do? What is the easiest way to lose muscle? Simply I need help. How can i get back on my game, as fast as possible. I checked my growth plates they are almost finished. Our school won the state competitions, and one of my close friends is playing for the state. I love to run, I love to play Tennis and basketball but I cant until I get better. But how can increase the time without completely becoming out of shape?

edit:

Note currently im eating about 1100 calores a day, and exersize 2 times a week, for off season practice. *this is very little excersize for me due to injury im only keeping my moves, and technique up.*

The easiest way to loose muscle, is to go on a low calorie diet and don't exercise. Obviously this isn't any help to you if you want to stay in shape. By the looks of things though, you do a lot of high intensity exercising, things that really get you out of breath.

My suggestion would be for you to maybe lower your calorific intake, and do more aerobic exercising. Going for long runs, but jogging them slowly. Anything that's at long duration, but the pace is easy going. Given the nature of your injury, swimming seems to be the best thing for you to do. It will put the least amount of pressure on your knee, but will exercise every part of your body.

I hope that helps, I wasn't entirely sure what you wanted Laughing

Its helpful, but unfortunatly im not allowed by two doctors and my x-rays to run, or jump.

But i still need to stay in shape. I can do about 4 sets of 300 sit ups,  and im trying to find more non - knee exersizes.

The tendons in my knee due to the injuries i sustained rub against the bone causing pain, and swelling, also bleeding if i do it to much. I took pain medication, and ran a 3 mile run in about 20 minutes, and after i had a bruise around my knee that was black and blue for 1 week (bad idea).

But so is the only way to lose weight also losing a lot of muscle?

Is there a way to lose a equal amount of fat and muscle?

Also: I checked I consume when not excersizing about 1100 calories a day.  Excersizing i eat specific foods... which makes about 2500 calories.

But being off sports, right now... Im eating 1100 calories and over the 6 months im just in training, I expect to weigh in naturaly at about 105 lbs. But i want to speed up that process, and still keep myself in good shape. My recovery rate, had shot up. Along with my heart rate. Which was normaly about 60-64, and now is at 70. (that doesnt seem like much) but that means, my heart beats: 8640-14400 times more in 1 day.

Im starting to get out of shape. Yes, I swim, but im actualy a rather bad swimmer. My muscle mass to fat, and bone density mean that instead of floating like normal. (normal people are about (2% or less) less dense than water or something like that. So most people float a little, close to the surface. I happen to sink :S

But yes, i guess i will need to start swimming. Thanks for the great suggestion.

Women typically need at least 1200 calories a day just to live.  Because you have so much muscle, you need much more just to maintain it.  So I'd suggest eating 1300 calories even when you don't exercise, at the very least.

I'm a bit confused with your post though >_<.  Are you trying to lose muscle?  And if so, why?

From my understanding, you're trying to speed up the recovery of your knee, correct?  I think the best thing to do would be to rest and let it recover instead of trying to do so many other things that might adversely affect it.  I think you're risking severe, possibly permanent damage if you keep doing this.

My best advice would be to speak to your doctor about what to do and avoid things he/she tells to not to do.  Swimming sounds like it would be a good idea, but I really think you should get some advice from a medical professional first.

what about swimming? I've been told it is low intensity and you do burn a ton of calories.

Are you able to swim?

Swimming to avoid sinking, sounds like you'll get more out of it. Anyways, are you allowed to walk with that knee of yours? Jogging or running is too intense for an injury as you already found out. If you are allowed to walk, you could try slowly walking 1/3rd of your running distance. As your knee feels better, you could increase the distance and speed and eventually move into a jog. Don't push your self if you are not ready. Ask your doctor if that will be all right. It'll be weeks before you'll be able to increase much on the speed, but healing comes first.

Don't be too afraid of going a bit out of shape. Once you're healed, you'll be able to jump back on to that wagon and get back in shape much more faster than it took you to originally.

I suffered a few injuries as well, but from a 2 vehicle head on collision. I'm 4 weeks down the road on healing and not yet on my full workout. I'm increasing as my body lets me know it's ready to. I actually found the fact that I started to exercise slowly (with the doctor's permission and suggestions on what I could do), my healing was fast and noticeable day to day. My muscles are reforming quite fast and I can feel how they're becoming firm in just under a week of adding back a workout.

Tell your doctor on what type of workouts you want to get back on or try and hear what suggestions you'll get. Pushing yourself will set you back quite a bit. As for food, aim more for proteins in dairy, fish, and meats. Those will help the muscles around the knee heal faster. You'll need carbs as well to keep your blood from becoming acidic and to fuel the muscles that are working and healing. You may even tone down the muscles by lowering the weights and increasing the reps if you are planning to continue with weight lifting.

The body requires more calories in order to heal. You might not notice it yet, or perhaps you have, but healing is draining.

Good luck and I wish you a quick recovery.
