Yeah, it might not be the great American novel... more like the great hasty novel...

But it can and will be done by tens of thousands of people (most of whom I suspect are young enough to have energy to spare and old enough not to have a bedtime).

Still, an accomplishment nonetheless. And if you've been meaning to get back into your writing, what better way than to dive in head first?

Write now, edit later, and it just might end up being the great American novel.  Either that, or a trashy, pulp, page-turner, which will sell better anyways!  ;)

November is National Novel Writing Month

Indeed! And if you need information on getting published, I recommend www.lulu.com! Which is what I am using to write and eventually published. It's super slick! My partner-in-crime has two books on the market that have reached bestseller status and has really encouraged me to believe that I can write! So I am here to tell you that so can you!!
This is such a novel idea (sorry about the pun!).  Very cool.  Might go dust off the half baked bits and pieces of stories I started on my PC and try to do something with them now.  Thanks tons for the kick in the pants!
I'm doing NaNoWriMo for the first time this year.  I'm struggling to decide exactly what to write though.  It's supposed to be something new, not half started, and that's tough.  Oh, well, I'm sure I'll think of something...only 11 days till we start!
Might take my Writing the Natural Way book out...
50,000 words is what they define as a novel.... divided by 30 days, that's 1,667 words a day.

A lot of people probably type more words than that on these forums in a day!  But yes, conversations are different from storytelling.. but storytelling can include conversations...

Technically, they do want you to start fresh on Nov. 1, but if I do it, I'm going to be plotting out my story between now and then, but be open to where the muse might take me.

I think it will be fun!
This sounds very interesting and I think I will work on plotting out a storyline now. Then when the time comes I can write, write, write. :) Thanks for the heads up.
I used to write...a lot.  I have journals upon journals of poetry and short stories.  Sadly, I haven't written in years.  This is a great way to rediscover a lost talent.  Thanks for the info nomo!
I wanna do it!  Better hurry and finish the giant plushie project I've been working on if I want enough free time to try this thing, though. . .
I'm gonna go for it.

No guts, no glory.

On November 30, 2006, by midnight, I will have my first completed first draft of a novel - and I want you to hold me to this and harrass me about it.

Ray Bradbury said: Your intuition knows what you should write, if you will only get out of its way.

I don't have a plot, or even a vague outline. Or a setting.   I just have a couple of ideas for characters....  :D

My strategy, I'm going to write 2,000 words a day - should take about 45 minutes unless I agonize over it, which I resolve not to do.

I'm going for exuberant imperfection!  I will remember Write Now, Edit Later!  Geronimoooooooo!!!!!!!  I can't actually start until tomorrow, so today I'm gonna think more about settings, plots, plot twists and such...  woohoo!
I'm doing it tooo!!!

who knows where I will find the time...between studying, and travelling, and the parents visiting for a week in November....uhm yea, but I'm going to try!!!
Nomo - no balls, no blue chips...

Follow the passion . Anne Rice

What genre?
I'm thinking chick lit would come easiest to me right now...

have tended in the past to try literary fiction - but 30 days is no time for the likes of that....  besides, I don't think what I wrote was all that good....

and this might not be either at first -- but maybe I'll have something I can whittle and carve into something good... or at least not bad...

:)
sweet....(in Eric Cartmen voice)
I am gonna try it too. I have been working on an outline most of the day. I am only gonna be able to really work on it on days that I work, so it will be a push to get to the required words on time. That's why I did such a detailed outline, so I can just go and go with little planning during the month. I will probably change my mind a million times though.

I am writing an adventure/fantasy type thing since I have some role-playing experience and I think that will help. I am excited and nervous about it. :)
I've been toying with an idea for a long while now.  It's a fantasy type thing and even if it never goes anywhere but my desktop I would like to have the sense of acomplishment of having actually finished something longer than 20 pages.  I'm going to dust it off and make a valiant attempt to see if I can get it to move along further this month :-)
Found the old draft and now I'm debating if I can count the previous work's number of words or if I should start the counter at 0 :-)
I am started and going strong. I am only writing on working day so my goal is 2500 words a day. So far I am on track but not finished for the day.

Good luck everyone.
