wrong crunches?

Quote  |  Reply

hi

I read somewhere that in order to get abs flat and tight, crunches wont do any good unless fat from that area is completely removed and you are only making the muscles strong, where any difference wont be seen (on abs) till you;ve lost fat from all over. of course fats wont just get off from a particular area. it gets off from all over the body when we burn it.

I tried the normal crunches for the first few weeks, in which you have your knees up with your feet on the ground and hands behind the head. but my tummy felt bulky after some days. has this happened to anyone else? So i do a different kind of crunch. i keep my legs spread out straight and wide open, making a V shape. and then i crunch. I dont feel bulky after doing it, but then i havent yet seen any difference in my abs either :((. sometimes my tummy looks good, and other times its shapeless again. i sometimes feel i am not working out the right way. I have so many dvds, i get confused which one to follow. i start with one and then suddenly feel the other one is better ^_^. kiddish i know. but can someone lay out a good plan to workout? I've been working out since last 3 months with very less weight loss. i lost 6 pounds, and gained back 3 again. Thats also coz i am not too strict about my diet. i am yet to give up chicken, which is usually not cooked in the most healthy way.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi. If you are trying to lose weight I'd suggest running or jogging/walking to get smaller. Err actually running/jogging/walking with other things thrown in (like small weights, situps, lunges) that kind of thing.

Its hard to say without knowing your height/age/weight though.

hi

i am 5'4.5 and 130 lbs. i do low impact aerobics twice or thrice a week for 15 mins. And strength training and some yoga kinds exercise for the other days (total 6 days a week). not exactly yoga, but something similar to it. i dont really know what that kind of exercise is called. in its introduction, the trainer uses the term "muscle exhaustion" (if that helps).

Why not big weights? I would say that to lose fat, lifting would be more useful than cardio (although diet is the most important of all), and heavy weights are much more useful than light weights. Some reading...

Those 2 posts were helpful, but coming back to crunches, you actually have to keep your belly button pulled in when you crunch up right? But hows that possible? Or is it okay for the tummy to bulge out a little when we come up? i am a little confused about the exact way of crunching. Its a weird question i know, but i havent ever wroked out in my life until now. Although i have lost some lbs, but not much effect on my abs. And thats whats leaving me a little discouraged. forgive me for the kind of dumb question.

When u do crunches, before every one exhale, it will make it easier to pull in your belly button (like this: up-exhale, down-inhale). If u do not pull your stomach in u will get abs, but your stomach will bulge rather than be flat. If u have a bulge when u come up, it's ok since it can just mean that your muscles aren't strong enough yet or it could be stomach fat. When your stomach gets stronger it won't happen.

Good luck!

Pilates!!!

I'm quite aware that no one will be able to see my abs for quite some time (weight loss is so SLOW). But two months of pilates, and my silhoette has def. improved a bit. I also find the core strength to make running and weights easier.

The way it's explained by my pilates teacher, clench your stomach as though you are trying to make your belly button touch your spine (while exhaling). Do that a couple times, and then use that to pick up your shoulders(or legs for the lower abs). Thats what flexing the muscle should feel like for crunches. Start slow, it takes a while to get used to the sensation if you're like me and more used to traditional crunches.

hmmm. that makes a lot of sense. i didnt know pilates was different from the normal abs workout. will give it a shot definitely.

Can anyone suggest a nice pilates workout (DVD)?
