hmmm...all my family is overweight so it had the opposite effect for me.  i started cooking and preparing my own meals from when i was young.  i think it's good to be accustomed to this style of eating because those who eat badly and are still skinny when they're young, always put on loads of weight when they grow up.

oh no, that's not good, mostly for self esteem reasons.  First of all, you can't compare yourself to your brother if you are a girl? (I'm assuming you are, since you said dress size)

Also, if you really look at the eating habits of the "skinny" people, you'll probably find that they don't actually eat as many calories as it first appears.  I know a girl who eats whatever she wants, but its always like.... 1/2 slice of meatloaf, or 1/4 cup ice cream, etc.  Needless to say, she is very skinny.

I would try to change your lifestyle so that when you finally lose weight, you can keep it off. yo-yo dieting is hard on your body, so I'd try to keep it off once its off :-) You don't have to love veggies, but I bet that the more and more you eat healthy things, the more you will change your tastes.  Sometimes, I just have cravings for certain vegetables... its really strange.

Last thing I have to say... portion control. :-) Best of Luck.  And I'm sorry people call you fatty. That's not fun no matter what. Sometimes people can be downright malicious and mean

Losing weight is only a temporary thing when you just go on a temporary "diet" and don't make permanant lifestyle changes (including exercise).  People thinking that all they need to do to lose weight is go on some whiz bang diet as a quick fix, and then stop are why, with few exceptions, diets don't work.  A lifestyle change is the only way to make weight loss last, and truly improve your health.

And, yeah, it's recommended that people eat vegetables, even if weight loss isn't necessary.  Vegetables give your body necessary nutrients and fiber that can be found in other sources, but not in as much of an abundance.  If you currently hate vegetables, perhaps you just need to find some preparation methods and recipes that make them more palatable and tasty.

In addition, eating healthy is not just eating vegetables, it's eating a balanced diet including fruits, lean protein, whole grains, and healthy fat.   It's not about being forced to "eat what you hate".  I've been eating healthy for a year and a half now, and everyday I eat stuff that I love.  Stick around the forums to get ideas on foods and recipes that are healthy and delicious. (Yes, it's possible!)

Oh, and if people are nicknaming you "fatty" behind your back, they're not "close friends."  If you feel comfortable doing so, consider confronting them about it, and let them know how you feel.  True friends will support your efforts to get healthy and lose weight, not make you feel frustrated and call you names.

thx so much every1!!! Kiss it helps to get food ideas. im mauritian BTW so curry is a large part of my diet which i have cut out completely. i still use spices but i dnt feel the same craving for rice. im on the south beach diet.

i guess u guys r right. i think i need to have a small portion of wat i love so i dnt have cravings.

i dnt execise bcuz u can c my thighs n bum bulging. im 12st n wen i get down  to 11st i'll start jogging. Undecided

some exercise would still be good...why not go for a 1/2hr walk each day?

and really try to look at this as a lifestyle change not just a diet your going on for a few months...make it about eating healthier...not just losing weight, that's how to keep the weight off :)

I would respond, but I was unable to wade through your post's terrible grammar and spelling.

There isn't an inch of racism in that sentence.

Anyway,

I understand what you mean about being the only overweight member of the family, because I am that too. I've always found myself something cursing to the high heavens WHY ME?! Why am I the black sheep of the family to be fat like this instead of gloriously in shape like my sister and my mum who always get the fab clothes while I'm skulking around in the large polo t-shirts department.

Thing is, there is nothing we can do about it except accept that you're different and do something about it rather than lament about why God has seemingly forsaken you a hot bod. Let me tell you this; thin isn't always healthy! Thin people can eat and eat and eat whatever they want--yes--but because they're skinny they have no idea how much damage they may be doing to their bodies. People like you and I, we get fat because our bodies are telling us "whoa OK, stop now, you should check your body" but thin people don't have this privilege and if they keep on thinking that as long as they are thin they are healthy...who knows by the time they DO check their bodies, the damage would have been long set.

Personally, I feel that if I have a close friend who would subject me to name calling, I'd SERIOUSLY rethink the friendship. What kind of "close friend" does such hurtful things to each other? Did your friends tell you to lose weight out of concern for your health or because they think fat = ugly? Perhaps you should confront your friends. I think the bottom line is that YOU should know what's best for YOUR body.

Picture yourself 10, 20, 50 years from now and unless you pictured yourself a heavyset woman can't walk 20 steps without her feet aching or running out of breath easily, then yes, you should definitely find something that is healthy AND most importantly, something which you can carry on doing for the rest of your life. Don't call it a diet (because that is sooooo short term!)! Call it a LIFESTYLE CHANGE!

You will be what you choose to be.

Best of luck :)

I'm assuming you are trying to call me a racist. Again, it's not like you are effectively communicating with your audience so I can't be sure.

There is no way I can even tell the race of you, as the poster, through your jumbled and confusing typing. I am not a racist. Never have been, never will be. In fact, my parents have disowned me for my interracial relationship and I have always stood up for the underdog.

In the future, I'd appreciate it if you did not throw out unfounded accusations. Thanks.

Hahaha, that SO reminded me of this season of America's Next Top Model where Dominique was having a fit because SHE missed her phone time, claiming someone should have told her, and when Whitney tried to tell her that it was HER responsibility to check the list and know her OWN time, Dominique called her racist.

Racist--the insult for every situation and occassion!

The OP already stated he/she is from mauritius.  It's just off the coast of africa and english may or may not be the native tongue of the OP.  Mauritius also commonly speaks french and creole.  Geez give the OP a break. Yes bad grammar is annoying, but if it's not your native language then do you REALLY expect them to be perfect?!

The OP obviously grasps English enough to "abbreviate" and write in "short hand" and to use substitute internet-speak, like 2 for to, u for you, y for why, r for are, b for be, n for in. And she grasps the language enough to know that there is an "s", an "i", a "z" and an "e" in the word "size" but she was too lazy to put them in the right order or type her message in any coherent way.

I wouldn't mind if she did not conjugate verbs properly or if she had problems with tense, or verb/noun agreement. The problem here isn't that she doesn't understand the language as it isn't her first -- it's that she refuses to type in any effective way. She obviously knows the word "think" and intentionally misspells it "fink" or she knows "ever" and misspells it "eva". It's lazy and rude -- you should never make your reader decipher your communications.

 I'm with you.

I am with you too...I have told my kids that I will take thier phones away if I ever receive a text like that...same goes with e-mail.  I will not allow it.  It does roll over into normal life when those "text" talk is used.

I have to agree with what this poster said. YEs you can Yo Yo diet but its not a fix.  For me its going to have to be long term to make this work. Once I lose the weight I never want to go back.  I look at this journey as a long term investment in health.

As for why the rest of my family is fat..well just an example. I am visiting them this week and so far I have seen different family members eat stuff like nearly 600 calories of ice cream with sugary toppings, 1000 calories in French Fries, another 600+ cals in Hamburgers with Mayo.  All of this adds up if you aren't paying atttention to what you are eating even after losing weight.  (this was just in one day)

Several weeks ago I would have eaten as much as I could have possibly stuffed down my throat and stuffed even more in if I didn't throw up first.  I was really bad for over eating.  I now have a firm grasp on why and how I got fat in the first place.  I was sedentary and eat nearly 3000 calories a day without blinking an eye.

thx u santonacci. i do understand wat u mean but sometimes it does really get me down wen every1 is eating ice cream n curries n RICE!!!! my abosolute fave!!! Yell

but yes i agree we cant complain..lolz

well 5 kg down..10 to go!!! yay!!!!
