Quote  |  Reply
I have just started Yaz after being off BC for 5 years. I am taking it for acne not anything else.

WIll it make me gain weight? I am on it for a week and feel bloated, I am eating about 1400-1500 and active I weigh 126 on average.

Any advice?

when I first went on it, I did gain weight. that said, I was also overeating a whole lot. I would say that if you're watching what you eat and excercising, you should be fine, because once I got serious, i had little trouble losing weight while taking it. drinking water will also help with bloating.

I took it for endometriosis, but it stopped working and now I'm on Loestrin24Fe.

i personally find i do better with weighloss when i am on it.  its prescribed a lot for people with pcos b/c of its low androgen profile and the use of spironolactone to make the progesterone that it uses... so it may actually (as it has for me in blood tests) lower testosterone levels and decrease belly fat, theoretically.

most drs will tell you that the studies on the pill, of any sort, do not show a strong correlation with weight gain in the general population.  you may however experience some initial bloating as ur digestive system gets used to it.  after that however, it should be pretty smooth sailing.

good luck!
i didnt experience any weight gain, so no advice except don't change your normal routine. good luck!

Hey babypayne- I can offer 2 sides to this... I am a family doctor and also a former Yaz user (not looking for birthcontrol anymore or I would still be on it.)  I do remember feeling bloated at first, and some women I have given scripts for it complain (!?!) that their boobs feel a bit bigger at first.  Having said that, the weight gain is usually low and TEMPORARY, it is actually a great pill for keeping your weight more steady throughout the month.  You won't get all bloaty before or during your period (once you have been on it for a cycle or two) and if you have any other PMS symptoms you can kiss them goodbye!  :-)   It is really my favorite pill to prescribe!  For contraception, acne, PMS, or the extreme version of PMS known as PMDD.  If you have problems, or feel like you stay bloated for some reason- the loestrin24 mentioned in the above reply is a great alternative.

Here's to your soon to be clear skin!

ill second traci's response re: boobs.  i have never experienced boob pain on a pill like i did on yaz.  my tatas went up almost a cup size (for about a month or 2 then they went down a bit), and got firmer and more sensitive.  i freaked out i was preg!!

the bloating will go away, it really should only take a cycle or two at the most.

i also noticed a more even temperment, it helped with my antidepressent, and i was better able to control my cravings, i think.  i think thats because of the drop in testosterone which drops the insulin production which then drops the sugar cravings/carb cravings.

Thanks for the replys. Yes, my tatas feel bigger and tender as well , I am having brest implants in Dec, so at least I can see what they might look like!!!!

I really do appricate the replys, I am also taking this for PCOS. I was worried bout the weight gain, but if it is just for a while, I can deal with that.
I was on yaz for a long time since it first came out, It was the only BC that worked for me. A couple months ago I decided I didn't want BC in my body anymore and my husband was okay with me quitting. I now use a ladycomp (www.ladycomp.com) and on my red days i use a cervical cap. But when I quit yaz i gained 10 awful pounds in less than one month, ugh!

I've been on yaz for a few years. My weight has gone up and down but it's not from the yaz -- when I want to lose weight and actually try, it's not a problem.

Like someone else said I do think it increased my breast size also -- and when I lost 40 lbs my chest size did not change much (maybe half a cup size that's it!!). But it's great for the skin, and good for cramps and back pain, and other PMS symptoms too. That is the only reason I've stayed on it, when I try to go off my physical PMS symptoms are too tough to bear.

Does anyone take Yasmin? I find (online discussions) it is sometimes confused for Yaz. They are not the same pill. I just got prescribed Yasmin yesterday. Any experiences with Yasmin, anyone?

It has honestly been easier for me to lose weight since I've been on Yaz.  A major problem I was having on OrthoTricyclen was emotional issues- I felt like crap always, and during my period it was HORRENDOUS- I had to leave work a number of times simply because I couldn't stop crying.  Anyways, with that said, I don't get the pre- and during-period munchy attacks that I used to, and I think the better balance of horomones (for my body) helped all the systems in my body work a little better.  I've been on it for almost a year, and I'm pretty happy.

My doctor also mentioned that BC doesn't really make you gain weight.... its come a long way from "our mother's" birth control.  I felt, however, that being on Yaz made it easier for me to maintain and lose weight.

Are you sure they aren't the same...I thought they were.  I'm on Yasmin and have been for going on 6 years.  It never made me gain weight.
When I took yaz I did not gain weight (only took it a couple months) but I did have SERIOUS cravings. I mean, they were bad. The only reason I didn't gain weight is because I practiced strong self control and kept up with my regular exercise. But food seemed to be on my mind more. I was also very irritable and depressed while on yaz. I know every body is different. So I would try taking it and give it a month to see how it affects you.

Yeah. Yaz and Yasmin are 2 different pills. Here are their respective websites:

Honestly.. when I switched from Yazmin to Yaz, I lost weight...

I don't have anything but great things to say about Yaz!

I was taking Loestrin 24 - hated it - would cry for no reason just before TTOM, and overall, it had a large impact on my mood - made it very hard to deny myself food or force myself to exercise when I felt so awful, and so was unable to lose weight, probably even gained (I wasn't tracking it then).

Now I'm on Yaz, and after a month or two on it, I could feel a huge difference with my mood, and not just at TTOM.  That allowed me to be more successful with my cutting calories and exercising, and I've been losing weight.

I took yasmin for a while, and had to stop because it was giving me high blood pressure, plus I still got horrible cramps. I'm on depo now, but might switch to something else so I can have a kid within the next two years. I think every type of oral or injected contraception can cause some weight gain, its almost unavoidable when hormones are involved, it just means we have to work a little harder, or find another means. I might look into a low-dose pill, hopefully it won't give me problems.
My doc put me on it now to help lose weight. Great stuff.
I've never taken Yaz, but I have taken Yasmin...

And that didn't cause weight gain- but something worse--- temporary blindness.... yes, from a BC pill! I had to get off of them right away, then I went back onto my old BC Ortho something...I don't even know the name.. how awful! LOL

But as far as weight gain related to the pill  - totally don't believe in that... when i started taking ortho whatever, i lost weight, because I was TRYING... but it didn't affect me negatively...

now Zoloft is another topic up for debate - I think that that stuff makes you gain, because it doesn't allow your brain to realize when you're full! AHHHHH!!!!

I am about to start taking Yaz and I am very grateful to have read ALL the post replies that are up here.  Most especially this one, so... THANK YOU *Planner2582*!!  I thought I was going loco about Ortho-Tri Lo.  My mood "swings" (more like bungee jumps & recoils) were horrible.  I have also been completey off-cycle for about 5months, getting my periods during the 2nd week of the pill (odd).  I hate to think what I'd be like if i was on the regular and not the "Lo" (lose dose) version!!!

I look forward to better periods, if that is even possible, with no break-outs!!
THANKS to all you posters!

I have been taking the zoloft, and I have noticed a gain!!! ARGH!!!
