okay, i seriously do not like bananas and continue to gag them down because the potassium really helps me with muscle recovery after running....does anyone know of another easy to transport natural means of getting the potassium i need after running?

thanks,

julie

An idaho potato has more potassium than a banana, and vitamin C.  Throw one in the microwave for 8-10 minutes (depending on wattage, and check halfway through) - top with whatever you want.  I like Laughing Cow cheese wedges, a bit of ff sour cream, chives, and some creole seasoning.

on edit:  other good potassium sources:  avocado, cantaloupe, spinach, swiss chard (and other leafy greens), and others.

thanks...you learn something new everyday...and do love a baked potato :)!

If you are a morning runner these might be breakfast options that would equal the banana content your are currently getting:

Yogurt (8oz = 579 mg potassium)
Cantaloupe (1 cup = 494 mg)
Orange Juice (1 cup = 496 mg)
Raisins (1 cup = 1089 mg) That is a lot of raisins but you get the idea.

Here is a link to the USDA database list.  It is a bit of overkill I admit, but good info.

edit: Bananas have 594 mg of Potassium per cup.

I am with you Julie on gagging them down.  I just am not a fruit eater, period!  I really need the potassium also since I take a diuretic for my high BP.  This particular med is known to deplete your system of potassium, and for me that means lots of muscle spasms!  Easiest thing I have found for me is to just take a potassium pill.  A multi-vitamin does not seem to be enough so I take the potassium supplement at the first sign of a spasm.

Don't know how you feel about taking pills, but it may be worth a try.

mcDonald's here I come -- 1 large fry has twice as much potassium as 1 banana:

21138 Fast foods, potato, french fried in vegetable oil 169 1 large 1164

But really -- check out the database, you may be surprised by the foods.  I eat a lot of mushrooms and a lot of spinach -- I am not a fan of bananas at all....
