I am new to calorie count and wanting to develop a healthy eating habit. I need to lose around 70lbs. I am basing my eating around the 10 superfoods. I have weened myself off coffee. But it was about the only vice I had. I am hearing conflicting stories about coffee. Some say it is good. High in anti oxidents, caffines good for weight loss. Others say its best not to drink it. I am very happy to start drinking it again if its good for meLaughing

Your comments would be appreciated!!!

Many thanks

Helen

Reason: 4/5/09: Stickied for a week, thanks; 5/8/09: Unstickied.

My 2 cents... No harm with drinking black coffee.

Love coffee, but I drink it black and drink it a lot in the morning. I actually can't without coffee early in the morning. Later in the day, I switch over to water and might have a few cups of coffee in the afternoon again.

Personally I don't worry about black coffee at all. For me, coffee has not much negative or positive affects on weight loss.

There are other drinks and foods that are bad that need more attention. Personally, I believe to change drink and food habits that might give you the most weight loss benefit is important and black coffee is not one of them (coffee with sugar or splenda is a habit that must be changed...)

One day, I had friends talking about MY coffee after dinner and tell me that it is not healthy while I saw them eating a big (almost) raw juicy burger and sipping Pepsi. Their bellies are hanging on the ground and I know they don't exercise. Before they give their opinions, they should prioritize were the big health and weightloss benefits are and work that list... I bet coffee will end up low on the priority list for many people.

what's wrong with coffee + splenda? i love using the 0 kcal sugar subs with my coffee in the morning - be it splenda, truvia, stevia, etc...

there are many more vices out there than using a bit of splenda in my black coffee in the a.m.

I don't want to open a can of worms since Splenda has been discussed many times on this forum, but personally I believe that Splenda has no health benefits, is not natural and therefore can better be avoided.

Although many people will disagree with me and say a little bit of Splenda now and then will be just fine.

for the past two years, my ritual was coffe with lots of french vanilla fat free coffeemate! I realized when I started using CC "Analysis" that my Sugar intake was through the roof! even before noon! so it took me a few weeks and now I'm a Skim Milk and just a bit of Cinammon in my coffee type of girl ... I have noticed a little bit of difference weight loss wise, and I hope that after a couple of months it will make a huge difference ;)

I would drink it up! As long as you dont abuse it and drink it all day long like soda you will be fine. Also dont get your coffee from fast food places unless you can make it yourself. a few years ago I would spend my extra money on getting a vente starbucks mocha frap with whip cream and everything at least once a day. Sometimes two times a day! Those things are killer in calories. Also very expensive. I now make a homemade ice frap using starbucks ground coffee at home with all the trimmings once a week. I only add 1 cup of coffee to the mixture. Its like a special dessert for me and something I get to look forward to! Although I could drink one everyday.... mmm coffeee!

I have Three cups a day  , Black with sweeteners, couldn't do with out it!!

If people Say it's bad, never mind within reason i guess most things Food wise, are OK within reason, you have to enjoy your diet /healthy eating or you just won't stick to it!!

If i didn't let myself have a treat now and again(within Reason) I'd go mad, been on this healthy eating/diet for just under a year, I've still lost 3 1/2 stone!(49 pounds)

Still Three to go, and I'll stick to it.

(Within reason) Ha ha Tongue out

Ok so I am a total coffee adict. Well espresso rather, i start my day out wtih probably 2 2.5 shot espresso in the morning and then consume usually 2 more throughout the day, but sometimes I'll have 6 total (this is not common), but yeah it has no affect on me anymore so I need to drink a lot, I can have one at 10 pm and go to sleep at 11....is this level of caffeine gonna have some negative affect? I saw someone asking if it makes ur stomach have extra fat on it or something, is this true? Seeing as bathing suit season is coming up....

I used to try to go off coffee because it seemed to upset my stomach. It turned out it was milk that was upsetting my stomach but that's another story. Recently, my Dr. recommend drinking a cup or two a day. I would look at the new info that's out there before giving it up... it has many health benefits among them: improved memory!

Just curious. What are the 10 superfoods?

There are actually more than 10 superfoods. They are the healthiest foods loaded with antioxidants and helpful for optimal health and weight loss. You should join the group Total Health/True Wellbeing for more info on healhy eating. The "super" foods are 1. Soy 2. Beans 3. Oats 4. Spinach 5. Oranges 6. Turkey Breast 7. Broccoli 8. Tea 9. Walnuts 10. Yogurt 11. Blueberries 12. Tomatoes 13. Wild Salmon 14. Pumpkin

Coffee is good for you...it has antioxidants...drink in moderation and keep up with calories and you are great...you should join the group Total Health/True Wellbeing if you are interested in leading ahealthy lifestyle! good luck to you!

i always need to have 2 cups of coffee in the morning to get me going...but when i brew it at home i make it half-caffinated, that way im not getting a caffine overload but i still get to have my 2 cups :). of course its with skim milk and a sugar supplement (i know i know, they're bad for you, but im trying to wean myself off of them) but i looooove coffee i could never give it up.

When I read the question, I was thinking about the answer in terms more than the calorie intake.  I read where Donny Osmond said he does not drink coffee, and I wondered if it was a Mormon thing or is it because it is a stimulant?  I have to admit, it is one of my vices.  I gave up a 3-pack a day cigarette habit 8 years ago and I will be darn if I give up my coffee, HOWEVER, I cant drink as much as I use to.  2 cups a day with no cream or sugar is it for me or my stomach hurts like heck and I get a little bit of a headache-but I LOVE the taste and it gets me going in the morning.  I was always wondering if there was something about coffee that in the long run will hurt you more than help you and the question still is on my mind.

Donny Osmond does not drink coffee because caffine is a stimulant.  Stimulants are forbidden by the LDS church.

Now that warmer weather is coming in I find that if I keep premade filtered coffee with artificial sweetener, ginger and milk in the frig I actually feel like I am getting a treat. Ginger, cinnamon and or nutmeg gives cold coffee a special taste which is refreshing (to me). Much better than full fat cream and sugar. Also if you freeze the drink for just a short time it tastes like a slush.

I ALWAYS do my daily sun salutations to the Coffee Gods. I used to add cream and sugar into my routine, but I've stopped that since going on my diet. Now, I drink my coffee black.

I always said that you can tell the quality of coffee by how it tastes black. Starbucks, for instance, is garbage black. Unless you get their morning roast. Oddly, the best black coffee (grocery store) that I've found, has been Dunkin' Donuts, and Maxwell House! (very yummy!)

I limit my Coffee intake to 2 mugs a day. My mother (who has been a nurse since the dawn of time) tells me that Coffee is actually very good for you, as long as you don't go overboard (just like anything, even vitamins). It's packed full of Antioxidants, and not depriving yourself will make you feel MUCH better about the weight loss process.

Good luck! ^_^

LOVING YOUR RESPONSE!

I also heard that Dunkin Donuts is really good, never tried it yet...I am with you, Starbucks black coffee was not a good experience for both me and my husband one Saturday.....never again.

Thanks!!!!

I want to rid of my Coffee consumption... but temptation drives me back to that beloved starbucks.

Plus, without it I get horrible headaches...

I love coffee way too much...

Make sure that withdrawal headache is not a migraine. People with migraines should not drink caffeinated beverages if at all possible. Or use headache meds with caffeine. Just makes the withdrawal worse.

Caffeine has been shown to improve exercise performance; specifically the number of repetitions you can do will go up if you drink 1-2 cups of coffee before exercising.  If you are a coffee drinker anyway, this is the easiest way to increase the number of calories you burn at each session.

Cutting back on the cream and sugar is definitely a good idea, though I would not advise using artificial substitutes.  Try to eat clean, always.  But don't give up your coffee!
