Yoga advice

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on what kind of yoga is best for toning and if it's possible to build muscle with yoga? I walk/ hike crosscountry 4 times a week (1hr) and do a hatha(?) yoga class (1hr) three times a week. Is this enough to be healthy and lose fat? I was doing weights but really don't enjoy it or the gym environment. There seem to be many yoga styles so a bit confusing!

Thanks!

To a limited extent, i.e. about as much as any other bodyweight exercise. Vinyasa or Ashtanga are the more vigorous forms, hatha is the more meditative version.

You'll improve in several fitness qualities doing the more vigorous forms, but you will be limited in your ultimate results if you don't add in some sort of resistance training. However, the limits of bodyweight conditioning is frequently wider than people think, and you may be satisfied with them even if it will take far longer to reach the results that incorporating resistance training will give you.

I tend to think that focusing too much on the physical side of things is a bit of a mistake when it comes to yoga. Don't overlook the mental benefits and the stronger mind/body connection from practicing mindful movement - the exercise aspects of it is the least important bit.

Is there a yoga DVD you can recommend?  I have never done yoga.  I could use the improved flexibility ... have been doing tai bo and some weight training.   I also was running prior to having pneumonia in the spring and found out in August I have asthma.  Thanks!
