Is yoga a good exercise to pursue?
Asked by crazyperson01 on Aug 02, 2009 in Fitness

I'm thinking of trying some yoga exercises. I do exercise 6-7 times a week for 2 weeks and then I go onto a different exercise. I  was wondering if Yoga is a good exercise to take up and if it burns a lot of calories? What types of yoga would you suggest and for how long (20, 30, 60 minutes, etc.) would you suggest doing it?

Answer

Yoga is great for building strength and flexibility but it is not usually considered to be a major calorie burner.  Most people  combine yoga with an aerobic exercise such as running, walking or biking to work the cardiovascular system and to burn calories.  However, certain types of vigorous yoga, like ashtanga yoga and power yoga, can provide a cardiovascular workout too.  If yoga is to be your primary form of exercise, you should aim for a 90-minute class at least three times a week.
