Yoga poses for pregnancy related hip pain...

Quote  |  Reply

Hi ladies!

I was wondering if anyone knows of specific yoga poses (or anything for that matter) to help alleviate the hip pain associated with pregnancy? I'm experiencing it when trying to sleep (I don't know if anyone else experiences it at other times of the day?). I'm doing Vinyasa Yoga religiously (thanks Schill!!!) which is helping tremendously with my pelvic pressure and back pain but not with the hips.

Any advice is appreciated!

Heh, pregnancy is totally uncomfortable. I was uncomfortable until about a year postpartum.

Anyway, in my prenatal class we did a lot of warrior 2, cat/cow, supta baddhaganansa (sp? goddess pose?), child pose, put our feet up on a wall.

My favourite was clam.

Thanks for the reply. I'm doing all of these poses with my prenatal yoga dvd. How long were your sessions? The dvd I have is over an hour, I think and hour and twenty minutes. It's a long time. When I did yoga prior to pregnancy, I didn't go past 35 minutes give or take. I just can't make it thru all that! I'm going to an actual class next week so hopefully I'll get an instructor's opinion. Maybe it's time I admit that this is it... this is how I'm going to feel for a few more months, darn!

Yep, pretty much! Our sessions were 1 1/2 hours, mostly relaxation. They were great, but once I left I felt pretty much the same: uncomfortable with heartburn. That lasted until I gave birth.

My childbirth instructor (Penny Simkin) said an uncomfortable pregnancy makes childbirth easier. Get it? It was true for me. I had 72 hours of prodromal labor (5 min apart contractions), another 12 of active & then had my beautiful amazing girl. 3 days of natural childbirth is HANDS DOWN easier than 42 weeks of pregnancy! Not to mention there is an immediate gratification.

I see you have other kids. Were you more comfortable with your prior pregnancies or are you suffering from the infamous Mommy Brain of Denial?

I guess it hasn't been long enough since for me, I still remember every horrifying detail of pregnancy and what a newborn is really like. My MIL doesn't even remember her kids crying. Ever.

Ah, someday.

That seems like a long session. My Vinyasa yoga consists of mainly lunging, up and down from the floor into lunges with other various poses. Some days I'm in heaven but yesterday, I was 30 minutes in and just had to stop. Ah well, I'll continue to do what I can but I refuse to pay for a session that's an hour and a half and can only do partial! One of these days, I'll fast forward to the "cool down" part and just do the relaxation moves.

My other pregnancies weren't horrible. #2 was very uncomfortable and I wasn't very pleasant. I'm trying to be better this time around, I think I've been successful so far.

I like the philosophy that an uncomfortable pregnancy makes childbirth easier, that's very smart!!
