Yoga for weightgain?

Quote  |  Reply

Since I started increasing my calorie intake to 2500 per day, I've been trying to think of exercises which are good for weightgain, and also ones that help my back as I damaged the lower part of my back 2 years ago.

I took up yoga and have started on beginning poses. Does anyone know if this is good in the long-term for weightgain? I'm 22, 5ft5inches, and currently weigh 101 lbs, my goal is 115 lbs.

Thanks :)

I don't really have any input on your weight gain question, but, especially if you have had back problems in the past, it would probably be best for you to find a good yoga teacher to learn the postures you're doing.  A good teacher can make sure you are doing them correctly so you won't aggravate your injury.

Hello! Yes I've been on the lookout for yoga classes in my area, but I havent been able to find one that specialises in the yoga I hope to continue with. My back is better than it has been compared to the first year, it just twinges, it must be one of the nerves or something, but I heard yoga was good for backpain, reason for taking it up :)

As long as you're not doing very intense, calorie-burning, sweaty yoga, I don't see why doing yoga would be a problem.  At your weight, 1 hour of hatha yoga burns 115 calories.  I highly doubt this would really affect your weight gain progress, but, just to be safe, maybe on the days you do yoga you could drink 1 cup of juice (aprox. 120 calories).

I really think yoga is a great activity for weight gainers.  I did it several times a week while gaining weight, and it really helped me relax and feel less tense.  It gently stretched and helped tone my muscles.  I think it improved my mental well-being as well.  I also really like doing yoga after eating a big, uncomfortable meal.  Certain poses help stretch out your stomach and aide in digestion.  I really don't see how it could hurt you.  Happy yoga-ing!

Hey! I'm a huge fan of yoga! Its really the only exercise I've done while gaining and has been really beneficial. I've had back problems before and there are special yoga sets that work for that, as well as yoga for digestion, which really helps when trying to cram in all that food. Stick to really gentle slow yoga though because yoga is a lot more exercise than its given credit for. You might not feel like you're "working out" the way you would with jogging or aerobics but you really can burn just as many calories or more without noticing. I focus more on the meditative and breathing related ones, especially since I think ED's are very much (at least for me) anxiety driven, this really relaxes me, makes me feel better about what my body can do, makes me focus and breathe more efficiently and generally de-stresses me. Sometimes I'll just do 10 minutes in the morning and that's all I need to have a better outlook for the day. And 10-20 minutes definitely won't hurt your gaining goals. It's basically my free therapy :)

I have a ton of online resources for free videos if you want, just message me and I'll send them to you.
