Yoga+Men

Hey everyone,

So when I go back to college in two weeks on of my classes is  Yoga...I signed up for it with my best friend since she needed a partner and plus you get two PE credits and I had an extra spot for a class, soI figured why not...get credit+exercise and kill two birds with one stone...

but a lot of my friends (particularly male) have been making fun of me kind of jokingly and my parents also looked at me oddly when they saw it on my schedule the other day when it came in the mail lol....I mean I am not dropping out and have no idea if any other guys are in there...but do you think it is strange for a guy to be doing yoga (I know they do)? is it that uncommon?

Also, what should a guy wear to yoga class? are sweats/shorts and a t-shirt that I use for my other exercise ok?

It is uncommon. I wouldn't say it's strange, though, or a bad idea.

Wear something comfortable. Sweats are OK. T-shirt is OK. Shorts are OK, so long as they aren't too tight. Remember, Yoga is about getting into and holding various poses and while you may not have a problem with lycra showing your every movement now, but... you may the moment you're surrounded by women.

Have a good time. Hope you enjoy your class.

There are men in the yoga classes I go to. They wear shorts and tshirt.
Nothing strange about it at all.
Hiya...just go for it. I'd take something long-sleeved and in cotton..no shorts since maybe you'll sweat... I mean if it will be some sort of power/yogalates....In my Dynamic yoga class there are 3-4 men out of 10 participants... which is OK. And for few months we had male yoga instructor.

I'm a guy and personally have no interest in yoga (especially the one where you're in a hot room - NO WAY!)

But I don't see what's wrong with a guy doing yoga if that's what you're into.  I don't think it's feminine or anything like that, I just think it seems boring and uncomfortable.

Really, if you enjoy it, then don't let others' stupid criticisms deter you.  No matter what it is, when we embark to do something positive in our lives, there will be some who won't hesitate to say something negative about it.

Good for you and enjoy your yoga!

Yoga, has tons of men in india, middle east and europe practicing the art on a daily basis. North & So america seem to have more women involved than males. I have had friends encourage me to go because weight lifting shortens muscle while yoga stretches muscle. Cheers

It's not uncommon at all! There are lots of men in my yoga classes. I suspect anyone who makes fun of you doesn't realize just how challenging yoga can be. I've noticed that the men who attend yoga classes at the yoga studio I go to are usually in excellent shape and really put effort into it, while those (few) men who attend a yoga class at the Y or at my gym almost always leave in the middle of class because it's too hard for them. Tell THAT to whoever makes fun of you!

Wear a t-shirt that is tighter than usual, otherwise it will fall in front of your face during the inverted poses. T-shirts are generally made of a flexible soft fabric to even a tighter t-shirt would give you the moveability you will need.

Have fun! Yoga will make you feel SO good. I call it the yoga buzz!

there are TONS of men in my yoga classes too (in nyc) and (drumroll pleasE) the majority are not gay. (also a stereotype so thought i'd address it). most are guys who have gf's who have dragged them.

yoga can be super challenging and is a great stretch and helps mentally.

agreed on the slightly tighter tshirt... i wear a stretch tank under a tshirt and take off my tshirt in the class.... and shorts are fine... as are workout pants (although theyre quite noisy).

good for you. ignore the masses.

thanks everyone! :-)...yea I really don't care what people think I am  comfortable with myself...and you guys just confirmed what I had always thought, it isn't unusual for guys to do yoga at all....it is a great form of exercise and takes a lot of skill/strength...

besides, I am a Soc. major which at my school is VASTLY dominated by females (all the guys dominate the "real" sciences as my friends always remind me) and am a minor in Women's Studies (the only guy at my school in this) and French (only two other guys).. ..so I am used to it and the ridicule that comes a long with my course choices lol....

the challenge of being the token male lol

There are a couple of guys in the small studio I go to who go with wife/girlfriend. I'm not sure who brought who.

The yoga class I go to is about 30% male, 70% female. As in the other posts above me, the guys wear shorts and tighter t-shirts. Yoga is so good for flexibility in addition to being challenging- a lot of serious athletes do yoga to prevent sports injuries.

Just think of all the women you could meet to! I know I'm always checking out the guys in my yoga class- there is something cool about guys doing yoga. It shows they are confident with themselves and brave enough to try new things.

I don't think it's strange or weird at all.  If you're exercising regularly, esp strength training, you'll like yoga a lot. IMO anyway. :o)

My man goes to yoga with me & I love it. :oD   He comments on how much he enjoys it each time.

I say wear whatever's comfortable, but nothing too baggy.

And way to go on stepping out of the 'norm'.  *thumbsup*
I took yoga in college and there were only a couple of guys in the class. Now I'm taking a yoga class at a studio and I'd say it's 30%+ guys. Most of them wear comfy sweat pants and a fitted t-shirt. Yoga requires incredible strength and discipline. How is that not for men?

Men doing yoga is absolutely NOT unusual. Many of the men who attend my studio wear sweatpants, men's yoga pants, t-shirts or tank tops, or some go shirtless. It's really whatever you're comfortable in but I wouldn't recommend really thick sweat pants. You'll just be uncomfortable.

BTW everyone who thinks it's unusual or different needs to look in to who the main Yogis are of the world. Many of them are men.

I think men who do yoga are kinda sexyWink

Your friends sound a little like my husband (age 42) did....until a few weeks ago.  SmileThere was a yoga program on TV and he got out my mat and followed about 1/2 of the hour long routine.  He did another one later in the week.  The next week, he told me he was going to have to change his yoga thinking ways because both his back and his knee were feeling better.  He's had back surgery in Aug. 06 and knee surgery Oct 07.  So there's two cents from a reformed yoga jester! Wink

Men who do Yoga are smart.

Flexibility is a good thing

Female to Male ratio is also a good thing.

Whatever?!!!  I go to yoga at my gym 3x/week and there's a guy in my class that is awsome at yoga!...he makes me look like some lazy couch potato and I'm actually not that bad!....Everyone that I've brought to yoga (which are all girls) have come out of class with a new perspective on yoga, it's NOT just layin around doin stretches!!!!....it'll kick your ass if you practice good form and challenge yourself so good for you for trying something new!!!!

My husband is a totally buff macho dude, and he often will go to yoga with me. It surprised him at first that he could get anything out of it, but he was soooo sore the next day.

As far as other guys giving you ****, You will be in a room full of hot collage girls contorting in spandex Wink while they are  in a room full of sweaty grunting men pumping iron. Just remind them of that.
