Does anyone have any recipes for dips made with plain yogurt???
No??? ![]()
I usually just go with salsa, but if you have a recipe that normally calls for sour cream, you could substitute the yogurt.
I know they sell seasoning packs to make your own ranch dip.
Really?? I never knew. I usually try making my own with spices in the yogurt and a bit of lemon juice, but it never comes out right...
You could look for recipes for raita (an indian yoghurt type dip) or tzatziki (a greek yoghurt and cucumber dip).
I don't have one, but now you have me thinking - I'll seach for one too!

I make the BEST dip with yogurt, that can be used as dip for veggies, as a salad dressing, on baked pototes or as a dip for oven-fried potato wedges, so many things. I make it a lot.
I use Astro Biobest plain 1% yogurt, it's the absolute best. Drain it for an hour or so in a seive lined with a coffee-filter to thicken the yogurt.
Then mix about a cup of this with 2 chopped green onions, 2 Tbsp chopped fresh herbs (I like to use a mix of parsley, thyme, mint and spicy oregano, mainly because I grow them on my balcony, using mostly parsley and just one mint leaf), salt (fleur de sel if you have it) and fresh-cracked black pepper, and 1 Tbsp of reduced fat mayo like Hellman's Lite with Olive Oil. Simple, yet heavenly. The mayo is optional but it's surprising how much richness just one Tbsp adds, so I find it's worth it. I also sometimes add in a small clove of finely minced garlic, if I am in a garlicky mood.
Tiziki! Love it with my veggies.
- 6oz plain yogurt
- 1 cucumber
- 3 cloves garlic (pressed through garlic press)
- squirt of lemon
- 1/8 tsp salt
- Black pepper to taste.
Just put everything except the cucumber into the yogurt, mix well. Slice the cucumber in half and de-seed with a spoon. With the small side of your cheese grater, grate the cucumber over a paper towel. Squeeze water out of the grated cucumber. Put the cucumber fibers into your yogurt mixture. Mix it up! And enjoy. For the best flavor, you should refrigerate it for 24 hours. Also works with greek yogurt. So low cal, and so full of flavor. I also use it as sandwich spreads and pita spreads.
PS: You can also buy one of those hidden valley ranch packets at the store and mix it with yogurt. that works well too. but give the tiziki a try.

Thanks! That sounds tasty, and easy! I'll give it a try![]()
If you want it quick and simple, just season the yogurt with any spice mix. I rather like Lawry's variety.
Did you know you can thicken plain yogurt? Choose a yogurt with no gelatin, gum or starch, just milk and cultures. Line a strainer with a large coffee filter. Suspend it over a deep pot and dump the yogurt into the lined strainer. Cover the whole thing with plastic wrap and put it in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning you will have a nice thick base for dips and a substitute for sour cream. In the pot will be all the liquid that drained off.
Incidentally, yogurt also makes a good base for creamy salad dressing in place of sour cream and/or mayo. It's more tart than either one, but depending on the dressing that can be a good thing. I usually add a little honey to compensate. You can adjust the seasonings however you like, but you can't go wrong with a clove of minced garlic and a tablespoon or two of minced onion to start!
If you're making a dip, you should either use greek yogurt or strain it like clairlaine mentioned above. For a dressing, regular yogurt is a better consistency (you might even need to thin it with a little vinegar).
