Hi. New too. I really like this site tho. I lost and regained weight on the Atkins diet and had extra skin. I'm hoping if I loose it slower this time that won't be such a problem. Anyone with ideas on this ...please help.....

Hi Cherlyn52,

This is my worry as well.  But I do believe that eating smaller portions but more often during the day and never after 8pm (a problem right there for me) could make a big difference.  Instead of 3 big meals a day,  I'm switching to smaller meals, with fruits and vegetables in between.  Therefore I'm less hungry when the next meal comes.  I will see with time if it makes a difference.

Also I'm looking for foods that boost metabolism (which tends to slow down with age).   I also like to listen to pop music and even dance (which turns out to be good exercise)!!!  But I do believe that we have to look at it as a positive challenge and not a burden, otherwise, it becomes negative.

I wish you a GREAT day!  Loumi2

Welcome to Calorie-count! Good luck with your goals! While 40 lbs is certainly not going to be an 'easy' undertaking, I think if you take it slow, it won't be enough to make loose skin a big problem.

Dishes are the chore I hate most too =P I think thats my biggest problem. I'd be perfectly fine with cooking healthy every day if it didn't mean having to do all those dishes.
I hate vacuuming...this apartment has hunter green carpet and shows...everything. I've read a lot about green tea improving metobolism. Also B vitamins and cinnamon. Never really sure what to believe but these things at least can't hurt. And of course exercise...like vacumming this rug....again

I think you have a good approach.  If you can't go to the gym you can see your daily chores as exercise.  When you go down and up the stairs.. this is exercise. Vacumming too and if you add music (higher volume I admit) it makes it already livelier.  I do believe in vitamins B and cinnamon that we can add to anything we eat in small quantities.

You have to like what you do and personally if I add music, it gives a totally different perspective.  I realised that too often, I would not reserve time for myself.  We deserve special time to pamper ourselves, whether it is to read, a nice warm bath with a book, or a walk.  Our body has served us incredibly well over the years in spite of everything.  It is now time, to show some respect and stop using it as a processing plant or even worse, a garbage can.  One way of doing it would be to avoid processed foods (too salty, made with transfat and/or too much sugar etc.).  I also read that the worst food are: white bread and refined sugar as well as hydrogenated fat (oils and/or butter) and we must not forget the portions or second helpings.  I love rice (the white regular one of course) pfffff but I'm slowly learning, and when you come to think of it, it makes so much sense.  Like our parents, and grand-parents, we've been ignorant of these facts... but now we have no excuse.

I'm confident that every little positive step that will become part of our new way of life will make a huge difference.  One day at a time.   I have now succeeded in replacing salt with herbs, I don't use much sugar and I have replaced white bread with Flaxseed whole wheat bread which I find delicious.  My husband replaced white bread with Smart bread (half and half) so it's one step in the right direction.

I guess I'm on a roll and could write about it for ever so please forgive my lengthy exposé (LOL).  We'll keep posted and see how we're doing each day.

Please take care and the magic word is to stay POSITIVE.  Never see it in a negative way.  People were able to go to the moon, I guess we can attain our goal if our mind is really set to it.

Best regards.  Loumi2

Hi loumi,

I agree with the others.  Eat more often, and watch portion sizes.  feeding your body with healthy foods about every 3 hours helps you from feelings deprived and it keeps your blood sugar levels stable.  Try adding more fruits and veggies, whole grains, nuts, yogurts, etc.  You are less apt to over eat at meals if you aren't completely starving.  Don't deprive yourself of foods you love either.  For me, I love chocolate and ice cream.  THere are great low-cal versions of those things.  I allow myself that after dinner, that way I don't feel deprived.

Also, get moving!  you don't have to be a gym rat to lose weight!  Grab a partner and get walking.  Just 30 minutes a day.  I walk the treadmill with my grandmom who is in her 70's at a moderate pace, and she shed pounds.  You can too!

Good to see others over 60.  Trying to get more active in winter is truly a difficult feat here in the Canadian soggy, soggy west.

I bought a resistance band, and have a exercise ball.  I can't use the ball because my dog, thinks it is a big grizzly bear and barks so much the neighbor writes bad letters about me.  ha ha.  The resistance band is great though for strength exercises, and I do my step ups on the stairs.  I also have some 5 lb weights that I add to this 30 minutes a day.

Hey.... I would like to see an OVER 60'S thread..... anyone game? We do have some significant differences ...

Hello everyone

My username is Spider_Lily but my name is (Kay)I am 50yrs old I am new here.I too need to lose 60lbs.I was doing Atkins in 2005.I lost 30lbs but in April I found out my Brother had Melanoma Cancer he went down soooo fast.He was only 50yrs old.He left this world with me holding his hand God bless his heart.I got very depressed I didn,t care about myself or anyone or anything.I think if I didn,t have my kids I would of went with him thats just how I felt. But it takes one day at a time.Time heals but it still hurts. Now I have to move on and try to lose this weight again. This time I am going to try to count calories don,t think I can do Atkins .I got burned out on it so if anyone has any advice on how to do this let me know.Tired of being FAT.Smile

The other thread (so far) is called:  "Someone asked for a thread for 60 and over; how about 40 and over".  I don't (yet) know how to 'zoom' there (possibly enter key words into the search window - I'll give that a try.  Diane
