What do you do when you're eating?
I live alone, and since starting my diet (and being broke) I eat home alone. this is how I eat:
sitting on the sofa, plate/bowl on one hand, computer on my lap, T.V on...
so, watch T.V, type with one hand, have a bite, chew..watch..type...text..
and just realized it's probably super UN-healthy!!
how do you eat? I'm probably as bad as it gets!...aah, single living!
Healthy eating is determined by what and how much you eat, not so much what you're doing while you're eating it(unless that activity is inherently unhealthy, like tight rope walking over a 500ft drop, you shouldn't do that while eating). :P
My Laptop is attached to my hip, and I usually eat cross legged on my bed in my room while I'm watching TV or using my computer.
i'm eating dinner as we speak so that show you that the computer is always on while eating. i don't think it's abnormal...especially for those living alone. :)
well, with all that talk about concentrating on ur food, and not being distracted by anything else, it has to be the main activity while u do it..
so i feel like am not doing it "properly"..lol
I usually check cc while i eat for some reason
I eat with my family. What really stinks is that sometimes I eat different food than them because I have different goals.
As long as you're aware of what you're eating, it's not a problem. I live alone and eat all my meals in front of my TV or computer -- but each meal is portioned out so I can eat everything on my plate and get a healthy meal, without overeating.
The problem is really if you're sitting in front of the TV/computer with a bag of chips and just stuffing them into your mouth. That's not mindful eating. Know what you're eating and be conscious of it.
I cook & eat with my boyfriend in the evenings, but if he's not in I still sit up to table, clear it properly, and even light a candle or something. I like a little glass of wine and the radio on when I'm in alone. I prefer to cook proper food, so it makes me feel stupid preparing something nice and then just eating it off my lap.
When I'm in all day studying, I do sometimes take lunch in front of the computer, a bowl of noodles or whatever. But to be honest I always feel better if I can just put everything down for 20 minutes and take some time to enjoy a bit of food.
I don't know if it's unhealthy as such, but I find it helps to have a room where I eat - the kitchen - and rooms where I don't. I'm not a big snacker at all and never have been even when I was overweight, but like this I literally don't snack at all, I only get hungry around mealtimes (not saying there is anything wrong with snacking, but I prefer to eat three proper filling meals and not "waste" calories on snacky stuff).
Because of my job, I often have to eat quickly...while I'm driving. My meals are are packed and preplanned, so they're healthy, but ag, it's so unsafe. I prepare work meals so that they're mostly uncomplicated to eat (no utensils required, no peeling, no opening packages, no heating, etc). However, I dislike eating this way so much that I will try to cram food down while I'm parked on the side of the road instead. I've seen my co-workers drive by as they're shoveling something like noodles into their mouth with a fork and I can't understand how they manage.
On the upside, my meals are usually raw and natural because food is typically less messy in its natural state and I'm eating it so fast that flavor isn't an issue (though I do make an effort to chew it well). This is also mostly seasonal, since I'm 2x busier when the sun shines.
I'd much prefer to sit somewhere and enjoy my food, like I do on my days off.
I eat breakfast and supper sat at our kitchen table and my packed lunch is usually 'al desko'... Sometimes I eat with my son but sometimes alone. I think taking time out for meals means that I eat more slowly and that I enjoy what I eat more. I've also noticed that it is easy to feel hungry again quickly if I've been distracted whilst eating.... like the food's going in but it's not registering. The days when I've got to be somewhere in the evening and end up rushing my meal I just end up bloated or suffering from indigestion.
If you are measuring your portions and staying within your calorie range and eating slowly, chewing your food well I don't think it matters. I eat breakfast in front of the computer, lunch in the lunch room at work or in my office and dinner at the table talking or reading the paper.
I eat dinner last night watching the news and cleaning out my fridge...
Turn the situation around and look at the advantages of living alone. You can cook and eat whatever you want - and that includes healthy food! I live with my boyfriend and we always have to compromise on food. For example, tonight we had homemade burgers. His was on a white bun with the works - mayo, beef patty, bacon, egg, cheese... I had mine on a wholemeal bun with relish, no mayo, a beef patty, cheese and lots of salad. It was very healthy but more calorie-dense than what I would choose if I was on my own (usually a beef, pork or chicken stir-fry, or a chickpea salad or soup).
You don't have to make any compromises on food, and you don't have to keep any junk in the house if you choose not to. There are definitely things I envy about your situation!
Meal time equals date time with my beloved DVR box. I catch up on a weeks worth of shows while eating my meals. It seems to be the only time I have to sit down and watch my shows!
My husband and I usually eat while watching tv, but sometimes we will sit down at the dinner table. From growing up I am used to eating at the dinner table, but it's easy in front of the tv.
i don't know if anyone has seen this, it was a program where overweight people swapped diet with underweight people. It was in the UK like a year ago.
They showed a teenage girl (slightly overweight, but that wasn't the point) who came back from dance class and was hungry. She ate a pizza in front of the tv. The next week after the same routine they let her eat the same pizza, but while sitting at the table with no distractions. She ate much less when sitting at the table. Bear in mind that there was no portion control in either situation, but it was interesting to watch.
When I lived a lone, I did not even have a table, let alone space for one :D So I ate on the sofa, watching something on my PC (didn't have a TV either). Lost count of how many times I spilt something on my sofa, which was bad, because it was my bed at the same time ...Now that I moved in with my sweetheart, we have a table and eat there, but we're still watching something on the PC.
I don't think it influenced me on how much I ate because I only cook so much and when it's gone it's gone ... But if you do have a supply of more food than you can eat, I can very well imagine that what growantree described applies. Otherwise I cannot imagine eating in front of the TV or PC to be unhealthy, except if you like sit in a really crooked position and ruin your back ;)
When I'm eating, I'm either standing in the kitchen leaning against the counter, on the couch with a dog and a book in my lap, or at my desk on the computer/drawing/studying, or all three.
I am amazing at multitasking.
It's never really been a problem for me. :)
edit: Or in the car. I do a lot of eating in the car, actually.
I usually like to watch tv or mess around on the computer while I'm eating- I also live alone for most of the year. As long as I'm not snacking and I have an actual meal in front of me, I find it helps me eat slower if I'm somewhat distracted by other tasks lol.
Growing up with a father and teenage brother who scarf down food like its a race has forced me to really focus on taking the time to enjoy my food. And yeah, if I spent time preparing it I want to be able to relax and enjoy it before it's gone :)
I eat with my husband but we eat on the couch while watching the news so we are not much different to you. I don't think how you eat really matters and really the slower you eat the better as it takes 20 minutes for your stomach to send the full message to your brain so by eating slowly you are more likely to stop eating when you are full rather than eating fast and then realising once all your food is gone that you suddenly feel overfull as the stomach didn't have time to send the signal.
We try to eat our meal slowly so that we can avoid the overeating problem as while we calorie count we sometimes find that a meal is still too big for us if its pasta or rice and I hate that full feeling now.
I always have to be reading a magazine lol
makes me eat slower so i dont get reflux, can feel myself filling up etc
Hahaha, this depends... sometimes I'm sitting at a table with my family, others, well... I'm sitting on my bed watching the Food Network channel TRYING my best to eat mindfully but I get so distracted I catch myself halfway through my meal without even noticing!
I tend to eat at the table. My family always did sit down meals and the habit stuck with me.
