How would yu calculate calories burned when exercising with ankle weights?

Quote  |  Reply

I have 2 pound (each) ankle/wrist weights. I use them when I go on walks, or ride my stationary bike. I also use them for arm punches.

How would I calculate the calories burned (on here) when using them?

I'd actually recommend not using them for those purposes.

The increase in burn you might experience is in no way going to make up for the risk to your joints. If you really want to add weight to your cardio, wear a weighted (and well supported) backpack or weighted vest.

I agree with amethystgirl.  If you want to use weights for an "arm punch" type workout, I would think holding small hand weights would be preferable to putting a weight on your wrist.

Whatever the gain, it is so small as not to be worth counting. Holding hand weights adds virtually nothing to a workout. Walking with an exaggerated arm swing (thumbs rise to at least shoulder height when swinging forward) can increase aerobic intensity--even with no weights. 2lb weights can provide an increase in this case, but that's about it.

For the most part, it's not worth the bother.
